Third period elevates Seahawks above Rams

BOSTON, Mass. (Friday, February 9, 2024)-- The Salve Regina men's ice hockey team beat Suffolk University 6-4 in CCC action on Friday. The Seahawks three-goal third period secured the win with two games remaining in the regular season. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Salve Regina 6, Suffolk 4
Records: Salve Regina (14-7-2, 9-5-2 CCC), Suffolk (5-16-2, 4-11-1 CCC)
Last Contest: On November 3, 2023, Salve Regina beat Suffolk 5-2 and the following day the Seahawks were once again victorious, 8-3. 

BREAKDOWN: 

Logan Calder got the scoring going within the first five minutes (from Walter Baumann and Jonathan Hammel), however two minutes later Suffolk's Alex Pratt answered Salve Regina's charge. With two consecutive goals Hoon Kim (from Matthew Fawcett and Parker Mabbett) and Matthew Brunton (from Dylan Price and Charlie Cocuzzo) brought it to a 3-1 game respectively going into the second period. Suffolk gained momentum after Salve Regina was called for a four-minute minor infraction. The Rams netted two unanswered goals, the only scoring action in the second period, which made it a 3-3 with 20 minutes left to play. 

The turning point of the game came in the third period when Salve Regina scored three goals within the span of eight minutes. Matthew Fawcett (from Johnny Mulera) got right to it with a goal 1:28 into the period. Walter Baumann (from Logan Calder and Matthew Fawcett ) and Parker Mabbett (from Matthew Fawcett and Hoon Kim) followed suit, scoring within one minute of each other. The Rams shot off the last goal of the day, but Salve Regina had already established a sizeable lead, contributing to their 6-4 victory. 

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • The Seahawks have two regular season games remaining in the 2023-24 season, both of which are CCC contests. 
  • Cayden Bailey is the winning goalie, giving him a record of 11-5-2 overall. Bailey faced 33 shots on goal and made 29 saves. 
  • Salve Regina outshot Suffolk 42-33.

On Sunday, February 11, the Seahawks host Wentworth Institute of Technology at 4 p.m. The team will be celebrating senior day by honoring Joel ShoemakerCayden Bailey, Seth Benson, Anthony Del Tufo, Levi Mitchell, Dominic Skrelja, and Garrett Szeremley
