NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University men's ice hockey head coach Zech Klann announces the commitment of Levi Mitchell (Olds, Alberta) for the 2020-21 season.

"Levi has proven to have a steady hand and extreme confidence in big games," said Klann. "He also comes highly recommended from his former coaches and goaltending scouts. We really look forward to adding his competitive spirit and strong character to our line up."

Mitchell played 31 games for the Selkirk Steelers and 16 games for the Dauphin Kings in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) in 2019-20.

Since he was a kid Mitchell dreamt of playing college hockey in the United States and now that dream has become a reality.

"Newport looks like an amazing place to spend four years" said Mitchell. "On top of that the hockey program is going to be highly competitive and only getting better, and I have a number of friends going there as well so I know it's a locker room that I'll be able to fit right in with."

Mitchell describes himself as an athletic and competitive goaltender, but emphasized the importance of composure as a goalie, letting the game come to him rather than chase.

"We were very excited and proud when Levi called to tell us his decision to further his education at Salve Regina," said assistant coach Chris Davis. "He is a special athlete who really puts others before himself and takes pride in protecting his net. Levi is an extremely hard worker and we were very attracted in his ability to make the big save in big games when it counted in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Recruiting him was an adventure itself because Levi is always outside!"

Mitchell, who is passionate about the outdoors and helping the environment, is currently traveling western Canada working in the forest restoration industry. He plants roughly 2,000 trees a day with his work crews.

"Levi Mitchell is the ideal student athlete," continued Davis, "and Salve Regina Hockey is proud to announce him as valuable addition to our incoming freshman class."

Mitchell along with the entire Salve Regina squad is excited to get the upcoming season underway.

"It's going to be amazing," said Mitchell. "I've been thinking about it this whole time while things are locked down, I can't wait to get back to the ice and play hockey."
