Summary
PORTSMOUTH, R.I. - Senior forward Nichols Mangone (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored in overtime to lift visiting Nichols College to a 5-4 victory over the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team in the quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Nichols senior Nicholas Mangone scored his ninth of the season 8:31 into overtime to give Nichols the win.
  2. Salve Regina freshman Mitch Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) scored with 59 seconds remaining in the third period to tie the game 4-4.
  3. Nichols sophomore Brett Epp (Edmonton, Alberta) made 41 saves to improve to 3-6-2 on the season in net for the Bison.

Turning Point
Trailing 4-3 with 2:55 to go in the third period, the Seahawks pulled their goalie on a 5-on-3 power play to get a 6-on-3 advantage. The gamble paid off when Mitch Walinski tied the game with just four seconds left on the power play and 59 remaining in the game. In overtime the Bison outshot the Seahawks 10-3, aided by a power play. Shortly after returning to even strength the Bison won an attacking zone draw and Mangone received a pass out near the blue-line, in one motion he turned and let a shot fly that found the back of the next to give the Bison the upset victory on the road.

  • Tony Rehm (Madison, Wisc.) got the nod in net for the Seahawks and made 38 saves to fall to 6-3-1 in net this season.
  • Nine different players scored in the game which featured five different lead changes.
  • Salve Regina outshot the Bison 45-43 overall, but the Bison outshot the Seahawks in overtime.
  • Both teams cashed in twice on the power play; the Seahawks were 2-for-7 while the Bison were 2-for-6.
