Seahawks and Bison battle to a draw

SEAHAWK MEN'S ICE HOCKEY RESULTS

Salve Regina 1, Nichols 1
Portsmouth, R.I. - Portsmouth Abbey
Wednesday, February 8, 2017

Summary
For the second time this season the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team and Nichols College battled to a 1-1 tie in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

Series and Streaks
This was the 36th meeting between the teams. The Bison still hold a 20-12-4 record in the all-time series. Three of the last seven meetings have been ties, including both games this season.

Three Stars of the Game
1 – Nichols junior Colin Brennan (Chester, N.J.) - stopped a season-high 42 shots.
2 – Salve Regina sophomore Blake Wojtala (Trenton, Mich.) - made 26 saves, including some spectacular sprawling stops, keeping the Bison to just one goal.
3 – Salve Regina junior James Malone (Beechwood, N.J.) - scored his first goal of the season in the second period to tie the game.

Key Stat of the Game
The Seahawks held the Bison to 1-for-4 on the powerplay.

Turning Point
The game was a battle of goaltenders and neither Wojtala nor Brennan seemed ready to break. It was only with the man-advantage that the Bison were finally able to break through in the second when Vincent Crivello (Rosemere, Quebec) knocked in his fifth of the season. Wojtala made back-to-back saves but could not cover the puck and Crivello pounced on the rebound and fired it in to give the Bison the lead at 7:07 of the second. Shortly afterwards Matt Ciulla (Stoneham, Mass.) grabbed a loose puck in the slot after a pad save from Brennan and slid a pass across to James Malone who stuck a quick shot past the Bison netminder to tie the game. The scores came 3:21 apart in the second period and were the only goals of the night.

Quick Hits

  • The Seahawks outshot the Bison 43-27 in the game.
  • In overtime both teams registered three shots, but none could find the back of the net resulting in the second 1-1 tie between the teams of the season. The Seahawks and Bison played to a 1-1 final in Burriville, R.I. back on November 19, 2016.
