NEWPORT, R.I. – Salve Regina University men's ice hockey defenseman Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) will make his debut in the Southern Professional Hockey League this weekend for the Columbus Cottonmouths.

The senior played two seasons with Salve Regina after transferring from Southern Maine University. Pompeo was an integral part of bringing the first championship in program history to Salve Regina, leading the Seahawks defenseman in scoring in both seasons, and netting an empty-net goal to seal a 4-0 win in the Championship game over Endicott College on March 5, 2016. Pompeo totaled 13 goals and 26 assists in 53 games as a Seahawk.

Pompeo was also named a first team defenseman for the second straight year in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast.

"Alex has worked very hard to develop his game for this opportunity, he will do great," said Salve Regina head coach Andy Boschetto. "I am more proud of how he has matured as a person and leader. We wish him all the best on the next phase of his hockey career."

Pompeo's first game for the Cottonmouths will be this Friday, March 18, when the team takes on Huntsville Havoc in Huntsville, Ala. at 8:30 p.m.
