Goodwin's hat trick rallies Seahawks to 5-2 win

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Freshman Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) scored three times within a five minute span during the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and lead the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Stonehill College at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink on Wednesday night. The Seahawks have won each of their last two contests to improve to 6-15-0 overall, while the Skyhawks fall to 6-11-2 on the season.

Goodwin led the way for the Seahawks' offense with his hat trick, while freshman john Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) compiled three points on a goal and two assists. Junior Mike Cenisio (Milan Italy) added both a goal and an assists in the win, while freshman Kevin Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Cody Zweifel (Dallas, Texas) each dished-out a pair of assists. Making his first collegiate start in net, Salve Regina goalie Frankie McCormick (Peabody, Mass.) stopped 37-of-39 shots to earn the win to improve to 1-0-0 in his rookie campaign.

Sophomore Bryan Rooney (Canton, Mass.) led Stonehill with two points including both a goal and an assist, while J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass.) scored the only other goal for the Skyhawks.  Dominic Sawaia (Cranston, R.I.) earned the loss in between the pipes for Stonehill despite making 32 saves on the night.

The Skyhawks took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Bryan Rooney scored the game's opening goal just 6:11 into the first period.

The Seahawks managed to tie the score late in the second period when freshman John Scorica scored a short-handed marker off an assist from fellow freshman Cody Zweifel.

However, Stonehill went on to convert the power play opportunity to regain the lead on a J.J. Sabin goal at the 16:05 mark of the middle frame.

Salve Regina managed to tie the game at 2-all before the end of the period with their second short-handed goal of the stanza, as freshman Kevin Kavanagh set up Mike Cenisio for his fifth goal of the year.

The two teams headed into the third period with the score tied, 2-2, when Goodwin erupted for three goals within five minutes. He started the run with a power play goal set up by Kavanagh and Scorcia at the 7:07 mark of the final frame, and followed with a pair of even strength markers at 8:41 and 11:55 to seal the 5-2 victory.

The Skyhawks will return to the ice on Saturday when they travel to face Southern New Hampshire at 6:30 p.m., while Salve Regina will hit the road on Thursday (7:35 p.m.) to battle conference-foe Curry.
