PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Freshman John Scorcia (Hudson, Fla.) compiled four points, including two goals and a pair of assists, as the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team defeated Suffolk University by a score of 6-4 during an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast matchup at Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink on Saturday night. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 5-15-0 (2-8-0 ECAC NE) on the year, while the Rams dropped their 18th consecutive contest to fall to 2-18-0 (0-10-0 ECAC NE).

Scorcia led the Seahawks' offensive attack with his four-point night, while junior Jacob Hutt (Menlo Park, Calif.) had a pair of goals, including the game-winning score. In just his first game back from injury, freshman Michael Naso (Londonderry, N.H.) earned four points on a goal and three assists, while fellow freshman Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) added a trio of helpers. Junior Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ontario) earned the victory in net for the Seahawks, making 19 saves to improve to 5-13-0 on the season.

The Rams received one goal each from sophomore John Stauffer (Lansdale, Pa.), freshman Chris Rettig (Raynham, Mass.), sophomore Wes Bonnell (Flenton, Del.), and sophomore David Seidel (Greenwich, Conn.). Sophomore Cam Kelley (Brighton, Mass.) took the loss in goal despite making a game-high 32 saves on the night.

The Seahawks raced out to an early 3-0 lead as Naso, Scorcia, and Hutt each scored during the opening 10 minutes of play.

The Rams stormed back to cut the Salve Regina down to 3-2 before the end of the opening period. Rettig got the scoring started for Suffolk at the 12:19 mark of the first period, while Bonnell added the team's second goal with just 1:26 remaining in the frame.

Salve Regina reclaimed control of the game by scoring the only two goals of the second period. Freshmen Matthew Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.) and Scott McMenimen (Exeter, N.H.) set up senior Isaiah Carlson (Copper Center, Alaska) just under five minutes into the frame, while Hutt added his second power play marker of the game.

The Seahawks took their 5-2 lead into the final period and watched the Rams rally back to make it a 5-4 game. Stauffer scored on a power play off a feed from sophomore Chris Boyd (Milford, Mass.) at the 9:54 mark of the final period, while Seidel followed with an even strength marker just 36 seconds later to bring the Rams back within a goal.

However, the Seahawks responded just 15 seconds later, as Naso and Goodwin set up Scorcia for an insurance goal, sealing the 6-4 victory.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday with Suffolk traveling to face Nichols at 8:10 p.m., while Salve Regina hosts Stonehill at 7 p.m.
