Seahawks drop 7-2 decision to Corsairs

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The UMass Dartmouth men's ice hockey team broke up a 2-2 tie with five unanswered goals to defeat Salve Regina University by a score of 7-2 at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink on Saturday night. With the win, the Corsairs improve to 9-3-1 on the year, while the loss drops the Seahawks to 4-11-0 overall.

Freshman Chad Goodwin (Whitinsville, Mass.) got the Seahawks on the board, collecting a loose puck and beating the Corsairs' goaltender one-on-one at the 7:26 mark of the opening period to give Salve Regina a 1-0 lead.

The Corsairs' tied the game before the end of the period, as senior Justin Pie (Medford, Mass.) set up freshman Shaun Walters (Plymouth, Mich.) for an even strength goal at 18:07.

After UMD sophomore Ryan Ruddock (Amesbury, Mass.) gave the Corsairs the lead with a power play goal in the opening minute of the second frame, Salve Regina's Jacob Hutt (Menlo Park, Calif.) tied the score at 2-all with an even-strength marker at 3:51.

However, the Corsairs then erupted for five unanswered goals to pull away for the 7-2 victory. Senior Rob Dudley (Douglas, Mass.) and Ruddock each scored goals in the second period, before sophomore Nate Dupre (Fall River, Mass.), senior Mike Owens (South Boston, Mass.), and Dave McDonald (Wakefield, Mass.)  added third period scores.

Sophomore Ben Vandervies (Hanna, Ala.) made 42 saves in net for UMD while improving to 2-0-0 on the year, while sophomore J.C. Turgeon (Sherbrooke, Quebec) stopped 28 shots in a losing effort in goal for Salve Regina.

The Corsairs will return to the ice on Tuesday, traveling to face Salem State at 7 p.m., while the Seahawks hit the road to face Becker next Saturday at 6:50 p.m.)
