Goodwin helps lead Seahawks to 4-2 victory over Ravens

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – Freshman Chad Goodwin's (Whitinsville, Mass.) first collegiate goal turned out to be the game-winner as the Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team defeated Franklin Pierce University by a score of 4-2 at the Portsmouth Abbey Ice Rink on Tuesday night. The Seahawks have now won five straight meetings with the Ravens and even their record to 1-1 on the season, while Franklin Pierce falls to 0-2 overall.

Goodwin led all players with two points on the night, adding an assist to his game-winning tally. The Seahawks also received scores from junior William Gomolinski (Western Springs, Ill.), freshman Michael Naso (Londonderry, N.H.), and freshman John Scorcia (Tampa, Fla.), while freshman Kevin Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), freshmen Scott McMenimen (Exeter, N.H.), and sophomore Chase Davis (Weathersfield, Texas) each dished out an assist. Sophomore goaltender Mike McDonald (Whitby, Ontario) earned the win in net for the Seahawks, making 38 saves on the night, while also adding an assist.

The Ravens were paced by junior Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) who had a goal and seven shots on net in the loss. Junior Sean Dunn (Quincy, Mass.) also scored for Franklin Pierce, while freshmen Timothy Sullivan (Rye, N.H.) and Timothy Haroules (Westford, Mass.) each had one assist on the night. Junior Patrick Dunn (Quincy, Mass.) made 34 saves in net while falling to 0-1 on the year.

The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead 12:29 into the first period when McDonald and Kavanagh set up Naso for a power play goal.

However, the Ravens responded less than three minutes later, as Sullivan fed Sean Dunn for the game-tying goal at 15:27 to send the two teams into the first intermission knotted at 1-all.

Salve Regina reclaimed the lead just 3:27 into the second period as Gomolinski found the back of the net for the go-ahead score. Davis and McMenimen both received assists on the tally, which was the lone score of the middle frame.

The Seahawks entered the third period still clinging to the one goal advantage when Goodwin collected a loose puck, raced down ice, and beat the Ravens' goalie for what turned out to be the game-winning goal, putting SRU on top 3-1.

Franklin Pierce refused to go away quietly, creeping back within just one score after Sweeney collected an errant shot off the boards and knocked it home to cut the Salve Regina lead to 3-2.

Things looked bleak when the Seahawks were called for three penalties within a span of 2:41, setting up the Ravens with 4:01 of power play time. However, the Seahawk penalty kill unit responded with some inspired play, killing off all three penalties to keep their lead in tact.

Gaining moment off the penalty kill, Salve Regina sealed the victory when Goodwin fed Scorcia for the final goal of the game at 18:44 into the third period.

The Ravens will return to action on Friday at the IC Federal Credit Union Shootout, while the Seahawks will take to the ice on Saturday, hosting Curry in their conference opener at 2:00 p.m.
