NEWPORT, R.I. (February 22, 2022) - No. 2 Salve Regina University men's basketball built a 22-point lead before the game was nine minutes old (29-7 at 11:22) and coasted to a 21-point victory over No. 7 Gordon College, 78-57, in quarterfinal round action of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championships at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Tuesday evening.

The Seahawks (20-6) advance to host No. 6 Western New England University on Thursday (7 p.m.) after the Golden Bears upset No. 3 Roger Williams University, 67-63, in another quarterfinal up the road in Bristol. The Fighting Scots (12-13) end their season 76 hours after outplaying the Seahawks in Wenham, Mass., 93-70, in the final regular season game. On Saturday and tonight, the Seahawks made eight 3-pointers; on Saturday, the Scots made 14 from downtown and then none tonight.

Gordon had turned back No. 10 Curry College, 80-64, last night at home to start the postseason.

All five starters scored in the opening five minutes for the Seahawks who held a 14-0 advantage following Andrew Richards' (Rosedale, N.Y.) fast break layup. Senior Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.) drilled a 3-pointer from the right top of the arc after the opening tip off. Graduate student Cameron Collins (Montville, Conn.) nailed a mid-range jump shot before fellow grad student Kevin Kelly (Valhalla, N.Y.) connected on a floating jumper. Spencer sank another 3-pointer for a 10-0 lead and then freshman Declan Walmsley (Franklin, Mass.) kissed the glass on a layup.

Bryce Smith (San Francisco, Calif.) spoiled the shutout bid with his jump shot at 14:50, but Spencer added two more threes sandwiched around a Kelly turnaround jumper for a 22-2 score at 13:38.

Gordon cut the deficit in half (down 11 at 00:36; 37-26) following a free throw from David Massillon (Lynn, Mass.), but Walmsley's 3-pointer 11 seconds before the buzzer finished the first-half scoring with the Seahawks up, 40-26. Spencer had 14 at the break and Collins reached double-digits as well with 10 points. The Seahawks shot over 53 percent from the floor (17-for-32) and 46.2 percent from long range (6-for-13) without a trip to the free throw line. The Scots misfired on all seven treys while making 10-of-29 (34.5 percent) from the floor. They made six of eight from the charity stripe.

Kelly got the scoring started in the second half and the Scots never got under a double-digit deficit, 55-45 with nine and a half minutes remaining following a Parker Omslaer (Jackson, N.J.) layup from a turnover. Collins had 15 of his 19 points in the second 20 minutes. Kelly finished with a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds, and added a game-high seven assists) while Spencer led all players with 22 points and survived foul trouble. Walmsley had 10 points, five rebounds, four steals, three assists.

Smith and Omslaer filled the Scots scoresheet with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Salve Regina and Western New England split their regular season meetings, each winning on its home court. For the Seahawks, that came last Wednesday when head coach Sean Foster, the CCC Coach of the Year, celebrated his five seniors - Collins, Kelly, Richards, Spencer, and Chris Peasley (Plainfield, Conn.) - before a 79-64 win over the Golden Bears.
