NEWPORT, R.I. (January 28, 2022) - Salve Regina University senior Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.) led all players with 33 points as the Seahawks defeated the visiting Nor'easters of University of New England, 78-57, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball game that was moved from Saturday afternoon to Friday evening inside the Rodgers Recreation Center.

The Nor'easters (3-16, 2-10 CCC) arrived late due to bus issues, but well before the impending storm is due to arrive as the calendar turns to Saturday. The Seahawks (14-4, 9-2 CCC) jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the contest and jumped into sole possession of first place after the game.

Spencer had the first bucket at 18:49 and Cameron Collins (Montville, Conn.) followed with a pair of layups before Spencer's 3-pointer. Ray Evans (Troy, N.Y.) put UNE on the board with his 3-pointer over four and a half minutes into the game.

Spencer and Evans both had 15 points in the scoresheet by intermission, with Salve Regina leading by six, 35-29. It was Evans' fast-break jump shot at 6:55 that had pulled the visitors within one (24-23) but the Seahawks finished the period on an 11-6 run. The Seahawks had only made two of 11 from long range (18.2 percent) in the first 20 minutes.

Clay Brochu's (North Kingstown, R.I.) 3-pointer at 17:27 in the second gave Salve Regina its first double-digit lead (41-29) as the Seahawks once again scored the first nine points of the period. Salve Regina boosted its advantage to 20 points (54-34) on a Chris Peasley (Plainfield, Conn.) layup with an assist from Kevin Kelly (Valhalla, N.Y.) following a defensive board for Declan Walmsley (Franklin, Mass.).

Salve Regina outscored University of New England, 48-16, in the paint. The Nor'easters attempted 38 threes, making 10 for a 26.3 percentage.

Spencer, Walmsley, and Peasley all had eight rebounds for the Seahawks. Evans topped the Nor'easters with 25 points, while Avery DeBrito (New Bedford, Mass.) had a team-high seven caroms.

The Seahawks host Wentworth Institute of Technology on Monday (7:30 p.m.) at the Rodgers Recreation Center. The Nor'easters return to action on Wednesday, February 2, against the Colonels of Curry College at home.
