NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University freshman Mikey Spencer (Abington, Mass.) caps off his debut season with the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Year Award for men's basketball. The honor comes as a result of votes from the league's nine head coaches who also selected Spencer to the All-CCC Third Team.

Spencer was a go-to player for the Seahawks in his first collegiate season as he played in every game this year, starting all but three. He averaged 17.8 points per game, which was ninth in the conference, and averaged 30.9 minutes per game. The freshman guard did a lot of his damage from downtown as he ranked fifth in the CCC in three-pointers with 72. There were five games in which he hit at least five threes.

He had double-digit scoring games in all but four of Salve Regina's contents, including a season-high 38 against Colby-Sawyer. Spencer's Rookie of the Year credentials were clear during the season as he won CCC Rookie of the Week honors in seven of the 12 weeks during the season (weeks ending Nov. 18, Dec. 12, Dec. 30, Jan 6, Jan. 13, Jan. 27, and Feb. 10).

Spencer set a scoring mark for Salve Regina freshmen (444 points) while becoming the fifth Seahawk to earn the league's top rookie honor -

  1. Justin Hackley (1993-94)
  2. Bryan Dlugolenski (1999-00)
  3. Greg Kawula (2000-01)
  4. Bryce Boggs (2014-15)
  5. Mikey Spencer (2018-19)

"Mikey Spencer has had a tremendous freshmen season for our team. It's great to see him honored by the conference for his efforts. He has gained valuable experience from which he will continue to improve; he has the potential to have a major program impact in the future. Our staff is excited to continue to see his growth." - Salve Regina head coach Sean Foster

Salve Regina finished in a three-way tie with University of New England and Wentworth Institute of Technology for the final two spots in the CCC postseason, but the Seahawks' 2-2 mark against those two schools did not help in the tiebreak procedures.
