Tale of the Tape - Salve Regina v. Wentworth

SALVE REGINA VS. WENTWORTH
  • Salve Regina leads, 32-21, in a series that began in 1985.
  • The teams split last year's season series while Salve Regina won the 2013-14 conference opener in Boston on December 4, 2013.
  • Joshua Hohlfelder led four double figure scorers with 16 points to help pace Salve Regina to a 61-53 victory over Wentworth early last month. Hohlfelder was 7-for-9 from the floor and also grabbed four rebounds.
  • Patrick Dinneen and Barrett Hanlon scored 12 apiece for the visitors with Hanlon grabbing four rebounds, dishing out five assists, and recording five steals.
  • Jeff Bielefeld finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Chris O'Keefe led the Seahawks with six rebounds.
  • Jherson Colon led all players with 17 points.
  • These schools have met twice in the conference's championship game, both in Boston, and Salve Regina won two of its three titles there (1989, 2011).

  • Patrick Dinneen swished a 3-pointer at the 17:00 mark of the second half for his 1,000th career point, but it was his 1,007th point coming on a layup with seven seconds remaining that gave the Seahawks a 57-56 win over visiting Roger Williams.
  • Dinneen and Nicholas Bates both had nine points in the first half for Salve Regina which went into the break with a double-digit lead for the third-straight game, 30-20.
  • Bates finished with career-highs in points (18) and rebounds (14) for his second double-double.

  • Wentworth suffered its third straight defeat.
  • Derek Mayo scored 11 points and in the process became the 14th member of the Leopard men's basketball program to reach 1,000 points for a career. Mayo presently sits at 1,003 in 102 career games.
  • The Leopards were led by Jherson Colon with a team-best 14 points. In addition to his 11 points, Mayo also had a game-high 13 rebounds to record the double-double. Sophomore Ronnie Turner contributed 10 points.
SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS
  • Jherson Colon has started five of the 12 games in which he has appeared, and leads the team in scoring (14.1 points per game).
  • Colon has been a recipient of Rookie of the Week honors three times this season, including consecutive weeks from January 6-19.
  • Wentworth ranks first in the league in points allowed defense, 60.9 ppg overall.
  • The Leopards' 35.1 field goal percentage from 3-point land ranks third in the CCC and is bolstered by Ronnie Turner (45.5%) and Ray Bessette (40.0%).
RODGERS RECREATION CENTER
  • Salve Regina's 34-point victory in its home opener over Connecticut College on November 19, 2013, represents its largest margin of victory in a home game for the Seahawks since an 86-51 win against visiting Lesley on December 6, 2008.
  • Salve Regina's largest margin of victory ever (51 points) came on February 12, 1995, in a 124-73 win against New England College at Rogers High School gymnasium (Newport, R.I.).
  • The Seahawks have outscored their opponents in the Rodgers Recreation Center by 54 points (414-361), suffering a one-point loss 10 days ago to Gordon College (71-70) and a five-point setback to Western New England (63-58) on Thursday.

CCC PRESEASON COACHES' POLL
  • Salve Regina ranks fifth in the conference's pre-season coaches' poll, released on Friday, November 15, 2013.
  • Gordon and Curry both received four first-place votes, but the Scots edged the Colonels in total points.
  • Salve Regina finished just ahead of Eastern Nazarene in the poll, a team the Seahawks lost to in first-round action of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Basketball Championships last season.

  • Barrett Hanlon is fourth in the CCC for scoring (17.5 ppg).
  • Pat Dinneen, Salve Regina's newest member of the 1,000-point club, comes in at fifth on the list (16.3 ppg).
  • Jeff Bielefeld is third in the CCC in rebounding (9.0 rpg).
  • Ronnie Turner is currently first in the league in 3-point field goal percentage (45.5%) and Ray Bessette ranks fourth in that category (40.0%).
  • Jherson Colon is ninth in the CCC in scoring, leading the Leopards with 14.4 ppg.
WHAT'S UP NEXT
  • Salve Regina hits the road this weekend to play at Nichols; the Seahawks beat the Bison at Rodgers Recreation Center earlier this month. Salve Regina returns home on Tuesday when it hosts Endicott.
  • The Leopards return to Boston for a two-game home stand, first against Gordon on Saturday and then University of New England on Tuesday.
DOUBLE VISION 
  • Jeff Bielefeld leads the Seahawks with seven double-doubles on the season.
  • Nicholas Bates has the only other double-doubles for the Seahawks, posting the first of his career in his first home game, and then a second in a one-point win against Roger Williams (18 points, 14 rebounds).

  • Sean Foster is in his 12th season as the head coach, the winningest in the history of the Seahawks (152-157; .490).
  • His 4-0 start for the 2013-14 season marked the best in program history.

RECORD BOOK CHECK
  • Patrick Dinneen now has 1,007 career points, becoming the 16th player in men's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point milestone on Saturday, January 25, 2014.
27 DRESSED FOR SUCCESS
  • 27 Salve Regina basketball alumni, with graduation years ranging from 1989 to 2013, attended HoopsFest 2014 on Saturday, January 25, 2014.
  • 12 former women's players and current assistant coach, Ashley Cerniglia, participated in the 40-minute alumni game (four 10-minute periods with running time).
  • 11 former men's players saw game action (12th-year head coach Sean Foster, and his former player from the Class of 2004, Greg Kawula, did not suit up).
  • From the Class of 1989, Sean Flanagan wore uniform No. 50, even though he's a few years shy of that age.
  • The class best-represented was 2011 with six players, which included the former Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of Year and current Wentworth assistant coach, Erin Phillips.
