Clark scores early against WPI, Seahawks fall 2-1 in overtime

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- In the team's first overtime of the year, the Salve Regina University Seahawks fell 2-1 to the Engineers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute as both teams battled the rain on Gaudet Field Saturday.

Senior Elizabeth Clark scored early in the contest and prevented the Engineers from getting on the board until just under 20 minutes into the game. With a 1-1 tie the teams entered overtime after scoreless third and fourth periods, but it was WPI who took advantage of the stalemate. 

The WPI game marked the last home event of the regular season and served as the Seahawks senior day. The team celebrated forward Shannon Kennedy, midfielder Lily Tordone, defender Maeve Ledwith, midfielder Ashley Lefebvre, defender Lauren Foster and midfielder Elizabeth Clark as part of the 2024 graduating class.

All-Time Series: After the contest today, the Seahawks are 1-8 against the Engineers. The last game in 2021 was an 8-3 loss for Salve Regina. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Elizabeth Clark '24 scored just 37 seconds into the first period and was assisted by Shannon Kennedy '24.
  • At 19:29 into the game Arie Lang scored off an assist from Eliza Dutson. This brought the score to 1-1- going into the half. 
  • Neither team scored during the third or fourth periods which brought the contest to overtime. 
  • The game-ending goal was scored by Eliza Dutson at 66:39 into the match. This made the final score 2-1 in favor of WPI. 
  • Salve Regina had 13 shots on goal and WPI had 20 shots on goal. 
  • The Engineers saw 14 penalty corners and the Seahaws saw four. 
  • Bryn Protheroe remained in cage for the entire contest and made 17 saves. 

SENIOR DAY THOUGHTS FROM COACH FOSTER: 

"This is a special group of seniors, despite not having a traditional freshmen season they have grown so much in their four years. They bring a passion for the game and set the tone for our team. Not the outcome we wanted on their senior day but excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us." 


ON THE HORIZON: 

Thursday, October 26 is the penultimate game of the regular season for the Seahawks. Salve Regina will go up against Western New England University in Springfield, Massachusetts at 7 p.m.
