Fast start propels Seahawks to 5-3 win over Lyons

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Salve Regina University field hockey team received goals from five different players en route to a 5-3 victory over Wheaton College during the Seahawks home opener at Gaudet Field on Saturday evening. The Seahawks improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Lyons drop to 1-3 overall.
Senior Kelly Burke (Georgetown, Mass.) led the Seahawks with three points (1g, 1a), while junior Lisa Bucci (Irvington, N.Y.), junior Heather Kapatoes (Hopedale, Mass.), freshmanAbigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass.), and freshman Alexisse Clinger (Nantucket, Mass.) each scored for Salve Regina. Sophomore Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) earned the win in net for the Seahawks, making four saves to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Freshman Olivia Papakyrokos (Fitchburg, Mass.) had both a goal and an assist for the visiting Lyons, while junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass.) had one tally and sophomore Sarah McNicholas (Boxborough, Mass.) added an assist.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead early in the first half, receiving goals by Burke (4:17) and Bucci (9:16) within the opening 10 minutes of the contest, and another by Clinger at the 24:39 mark.
The Lyons got on the board at 25:15 as Papakyrokos set up Rocha for a blast that found the back of the cage to cut the Salve Regina lead to 3-1.
The Seahawks reclaimed their three-goal advantage just minutes later when Burke centered a pass that was knocked home by Kapatoes in the 28th minute of play.
The score stood at 4-1 at the break with Salve Regina holding a 9-6 edge in shots and Wheaton leading in corners, 2-1.
The Lyons wasted little time scoring in the second half as McNicholas fed Papakyrokos for a goal just under three and a half minutes into the period, dropping the Seahawks' lead down to 4-2.
The Salve Regina lead was then cut down to just one when the Seahawks allowed an own goal on a shot from outside the arc at 48:23.
The Seahawks responded just 26 seconds later when Tepper slapped a shot past the Lyons' goalie to put Salve Regina ahead by the final score of 5-3.
The Lyons will return to action on Sunday at home versus Simmons, while the Seahawks will travel to face Bridgewater State on Tuesday.
