New England College Trips Up Seahawks, 2-1

HENNIKER, N.H. - New England College junior Marisa Ayotte (Feeding Hills, Mass.) netted the game-winner with 20 minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Pilgrims past the visiting Salve Regina University Seahawks 2-1 Monday afternoon.

 

With the win the Pilgrims improve to 7-3 overall and remain undefeated in conference play improving to 3-0. The loss drops the Seahawks to 6-5 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.

 

The two teams battled scoreless through much of the opening half before NEC's Rachel Carnaroli (Bellingham, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal off a cross from Stephanie Bishop (Shoreham, Vt.) with just under five minutes remaining in the opening half. The Seahawks awnswered as junior Brittany Lopes (Lexington, Mass.) dribbled through three Pilgrim defenders and scored her fourth goal of the season to tie the game at one just under a minute later.

 

NEC broke the tie 15 minutes into the second half as the Pilgrims converted on a corner. Ayotte tipped in a pass from Kate Carnaroli (Bellingham, Mass.). NEC outshot Salve Regina 19-6 and held a 12-5 advantage in corners on the afternoon.

 

Picking up the win in net for NEC was Mary Roux (Auburn, Mass.) who finished with two saves. In net for Salve Regina was senior Devin Eppley (Darien, Conn.), who recorded 11 saves on the afternoon.

 

New England College will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 7 when it hosts conference opponent Western New England College at 3:30 p.m. Salve Regina will travel to take on Western New England College on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
