Arno, Ludemann, Maruca named to D3football.com All-Region teams

NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, December 6, 2023) -- Salve Regina University football landed three on the 2023 D3football.com All-Region 1 Team after a 9-2 campaign that included their first New England Bowl championship - senior defensive back Avery Arno (Belmont, Mass.), senior linebacker Zachary Ludemann (Howell, N.J.), and senior offensive lineman Luke Maruca (North Haven, Conn.).

All three Seahawks were first team All-NEWMAC selections last month after Salve Regina finished 6-1 for second place in its first season in the league.

Ludemann had also earned NEWMAC co-Defensive Player of the Year honors along with recognition from the New England Football Writers (NEFW) on the all-region team. Maruca's additional accolade includes a spot on the NEWMAC Sportsmanship Team.

"Luke was a DNA match for someone with cancer," said Salve Regina head coach Kevin Gilmartin. "He did all the pre work and found out he was a 98% match. He then agreed to donate his white blood cells and save that person's life. He went into the hospital every day for a week for injections to raise his white blood cell blood cells. He then went in for the operation and donated the cells which were then immediately flown to the patient's hospital."

Arno, Ludemann, Maruca are among eight Seahawks nominated for College Sports Communicators' Academic All-America® program.

NCAA Division III realigned Division III football into six regions in 2021. Region 1 includes the Commonwealth Coast Conference, Eastern Collegiate Football Conference, Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, Middle Atlantic Conference, New England Small College Athletic Conference, New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.

The teams, selected in balloting by Region 1 sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 210 nominations by full Division III member schools. A total of 78 players were chosen. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 15, in D3football.com's pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl 50.
