NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University football team hosts the University of Rochester in a non-conference matchup at Toppa Field. Bobb Angel and Jim Ascoli have the live call for WADK and simulcast on the Seahawk's live video stream on the NEWMAC Sports Network.

LAST TIME OUT
The Seahawks won their opener, 29-0 over Framingham State University, and posted back-to-back shutouts to open a season for the first time. The Seahawk 'D' had four interceptions with two from senior Avery Arno (Belmont, Mass.) and one each from senior Jack Zingaro (Newtown, Conn.) and junior Nick Bostrom (Norwell, Mass.).

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Brian Johnson punted six times for 252 yards (42.0 avg/p) and stuck three inside the 20 including twice inside the 3-yard line.
  • Josh Letellier led the receiving corps with four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.
  • Justan Luzzi had the most carries (14) for the Seahawks and netted 76 yards on the ground while punching it into the endzone once.
  • Jake Stack complete nine of 16 passes for 101 yards and a TD connection with Letellier.
  • Chris DiBella made all three PAT tries and was successful on two of three field goal attempts (36, 41, while missing a 44-yarder).
  • Nick Bostrom now has three picks on the season.
  • After DiBella's punt pinned the Rams at their own 3-yard line, Marc Promutico sacked the QB in the endzone for a two-point safety.
  • Rams had 1st-and-goal at the Seahawk nine-yard line before the Salve Regina defense pushed Framingham State back 15 yards and got a turnover on downs in the middle of the fourth quarter.
  • Third time in program history with consecutive shutouts; first time to start a season.

WEEKLY HONORS

  • Senior defensive back Avery Arno earned Defensive Player of the Week honor from the NEWMAC. Arno had two picks in the win over Framingham State and finished with seven tackles during the shutout.

SEAHAWKS NOTES FROM THE NEST

  • Jake Stack has thrown six (6) touchdown passes and 414 yards in two games.
  • Justan Luzzi has carried the ball 31 times for 186 yards rushing and three TDs.
  • Josh Letellier (6), Marcelino La Bella (5), Andre Sullivan (5) each have five or more receptions.
  • Zachary Ludemann leads the Seahawks with 11.0 tackles per game (12 solo, 10 assisted).
  • Salve Regina has had consecutive shutouts in a season twice before - 1996 Nov. 2 (19-0 at Assumption), Nov. 9 (51-0 v. Western New England); 1997 Oct. 18 (10-0 at Maine Maritime), Oct. 25 (10-0 at Assumption).
  • Most shutouts in a single season is three (3) in 1997; in addition to the 10-0 wins over Maine Maritime and Assumption, the Seahawks def. Nichols, 34-0, on Sept. 20, 1997.
  • A quartet of Seahawks - Zachary Ludemann, Jason Azzolino, Jesse Lagrosa, CJ Minchin - will lead the 2023 squad.

ABOUT THE YELLOW JACKETS

  • Rochester trounced visiting Alfred State, 49-7, last Saturday, picking up its first win of the 2023 campaign.
  • The Yellowjackets were up 35-0 at halftime and cruised to the win, only allowing the Pioneers to score on their final drive of the contest.
  • UR had 461 yards of total offense (285 rush, 176 pass), 26 first downs and held Alfred State to just 161 yards of offense, including only 30 rush yards.
  • Ryan Rose tossed for 176 yards, 2 TDs and added a TD rush in the win, while Daniel Papantonis piled up 152 yards rushing, 2 TDs and a 56 yard long run.
  • Defensively, Keyden Snow led UR with 10 tackles (8 solo), while Happy Chane had seven with a pair of QB hurries.
  • Judah Thomas had an interception for the second week in a row in the defensive backfield.

Today is the first-ever meeting between Salve Regina and Rochester on the gridiron.

Rochester plays its second of three-straight road games on Saturday, September 23, at University of New England (1 p.m.); Salve Regina has its second game away from Toppa in 2023 when it travels to Cambridge, Mass., next Saturday, September 23 (12 p.m.) to play its first NEWMAC contest - MIT.
