Seahawks seek to disprove doubters

BIDDEFORD, Maine – After having the 2020 season canceled due to COVID-19, the coaches has picked Western New England University to win the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Football title in 2021.

Kevin Gilmartin, the longest tenured coach in program history, enters his ninth season at the helm of the Salve Regina University football team which was picked to finish fifth this season. 

Gilmartin and his coaching staff will lean heavily on the strength of their returning seniors and graduate students. Pete Noonan(Ardmore, Pa.), Elian Telford (Phillipsburg, N.J.), Blake Gueereri(Old Greenwich, Conn.), Jason Azzolino (Saddle Brook, N.J.), and Steven Dhooge (Plymouth, Mass.) all return as starters along their offensive line with quarterback Jack Maguire (Abington, Mass.), wideouts Pat Travers (Plymouth, Mass.), Max Devito (Cedar Grove, N.J.), Hayden Hulme (Milford, Conn.), tight end Joe Hyland(Washinton Township, N.J.), and running back Joey Mauriello(Colts Neck, N.J.).  

Meanwhile John Goode (Rockland, Mass.), Matt Sylvia (East Greenwich, R.I.), Zack Catarius (Sandwich, Mass.), Zach Letellier(Groton Long Point, Conn.), Jacob Miller (Lynn, Mass.), and Bobby de Poortere (Bernardsville, N.J.) all return to help anchor the defense. 

Catarius, Mauriello, Noonan, and Telford will serve as team captains. 

"We are expecting tremendous leadership from our four captains along with the more than 30 seniors and graduate students on our roster this year," said Gilmartin. "We are excited for this year. To be back, doing what we love, makes us a very happy football team!" 

The 2021 CCC Football season will begin on the first weekend of September with all seven teams kicking off their non-conference schedules. The fight for the league crown begins on Sat. Oct. 2 as teams compete to reach the top of the table by season's end. The team that finishes with the best record in CCC Football play will be named the 2021 CCC Football Champion and will represent the conference in the 2021 NCAA Division III Football Championship as the automatic qualifier.
