Seahawks name five captains for 2016

NEWPORT, R.I. – Salve Regina University football head coach Kevin Gilmartin announced his captains for 2016 – Brandan Basil (Northford, Conn.), Noah Drake (Needham, Mass.), Joey Farrar (Watertown, Mass.), Ethan Gambale (Mays Landing, N.J.), and Sam Pascale (Cheshire, Conn.).

"These are five players that are such great leaders on and off the field that we are giving the title of captain to them this year," said head coach Kevin Gilmartin. "They have been leaders of the Salve football program from the moment they set foot on campus. I am excited to see what the future brings under their leadership."

Basil had a superb season in his first at Salve Regina. Basil completed 180 passes for 2,536 yards and 32 touchdowns with nine interceptions. Basil's 253.6 passing yards per game is best all-time for any Seahawk quarterback and was tops in the NEFC. Basil threw for four touchdowns four times, and threw five touchdowns once. Basil Also produced the first ever 400 yard passing performance for a Seahawks quarterback in Salve Regina's 42-39 victory in the ECAC Clayton Chapman Bowl. Basil threw for 5 touchdowns and 421 yards in that game.

Drake, who was named the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Offensive Lineman of the Year, helped to anchor a line that only allowed eight sacks all season, while averaging 206.7 yards per game on the ground and scoring 36.7 points per game.  

Farrar ranked third on the Seahawks in tackles, and led all defensive backs on the team with 45 tackles, 27 solo and 18 assisted. Farrar had four interceptions, tops for any Salve Regina defensive player. Farrar also broke up five passes.

Gambale was second on the Seahawks in tackles, 79 total with 51 solo and 28 assisted in 2015. Gambale also registered 5.5 sacks for a loss of 39 yards and 12 tackles for a loss of 65 yards, the most on the Seahawks.

Pascale set a new single-season record for Salve Regina with 1,482 rushing yards, besting the mark previously set by Mark DeBiasio - 1,461 yards in 1998. Pascale became just the sixth player in school history to eclipse 2,000 career-rushing yards (2,179 yards ranks fifth on the all-time Seahawk list) His 148.2 rushing yards per game ranks first all-time in program history for a single season (10 games).

The Seahawks open the 2016 campaign on the road versus Worcester State on September 2 at 7 p.m.
