NEWPORT, R.I. (Thursday, April 25, 2024) - Salve Regina University baseball closed out its three-game non-league mid-week homestand with a 15-5 win in eight innings over visiting Anna Maria College on a sunny but cold Thursday afternoon at Reynolds Field. The #7 Seahawks (27-5, 10-2 NEWMAC) win their third straight overall and sixth straight at Reynolds Field, sporting a 14-1 mark at home in 2024 (last year, Salve Regina finished 19-0 at home). The AMCATS (16-19, 9-7 GNAC) falter after sweeping Fitchburg State earlier this week.

Today was the first meeting between the two schools on the Newport diamond since 2010. Salve Regina has won the last six meetings and owns a 51-6 overall mark in the series.

Wil McCarthy (Pembroke, Mass.) went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double, three RBI, and three runs scored. Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.) went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and three runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • B1 - Seahawks loaded the bases on two hit batters and a walk, and scored on a passed ball. | Seahawks 1, Amcats 0
  • B2 - Wil McCarthy and Brady Smolinski were both hit by a pitch and then Evan O'Rourke singled (first hit of the game) to load the bases. Matt D'Amato's fielder's choice grounder made it a 2-0 score. | Seahawks 2, Amcats 0
  • B3 - With two outs, Tyler Petrosino drew a base on balls and stole second. Wil McCarthy singled him home. | Seahawks 3, Amcats 0
  • B4 - Christian Homa had an RBI single and Tyler Cannoe lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Homa later scored when Petrosino's fly ball was misplayed. | Seahawks 6, Amcats 0
  • T7 - The visitors scored five unearned runs to make it a one-run game. Jarryn Barber and Brady Aylward opened with seeing-eye singles to bring Jonathon Guardascione to the plate. Three runs came in on two throwing errors across the diamond. Riley Grindle blooped a single to left field but was erased on a double-play grounder from pitcher (Andrew Wertz) to first base (Tyler Cannoe) to shortstop (Michael Breen). Kosta Drosidis drove in a run with a double to right center and Josh Batchelder's slow roller to third base trimmed the deficit to one. | Seahawks 6, Amcats 5
  • B7 - Wil McCarthy and Brady Smolinski started the inning with back-to-back singles. Evan O'Rourke's sacrifice fly scored McCarthy and Matt D'Amato's basehit brought Smolinski across the plate. | Seahawks 8, Amcats 5
  • B8 - Hunter Yaworski led off a seven-run frame with a single to right field. Pinch-runner Matt Stokes stole second. After Tyler Petrosino walked, Wil McCarthy singled in Stokes from second. Petrosino scored on a wild pitch. Michael Breen's single brought in two runs. Matt D'Amato doubled to right center to score Breen before a bases-loaded walk to Stokes made it a nine-run lead for the Seahawks. McCarthy's single to right field ended the game on the 10-run mercy rule. | Seahawks 15, Amcats 5

NOTEWORTHY

  • Matt D'Amato's three hits surged him from eighth all-time in program history to sixth, leapfrogging Damian Costantino (200 from 2001-2004) and John Militano (201 from 2015-2018).
  • Tyler DelVecchio (W, 3-0) came on in the third with one out and inherited a pair of Amcat baserunners and a batter ahead with a 2-0 count. The righty struck him out on three pitches and stranded the runners on a fly out to Petrosino in center.
  • Jason Arrigo (S, 2) arrived in the seventh with a runner on first and three runs already in for the visitors. He recorded four strikeouts including setting the side down in order in the eighth.
