LYNCHBURG, Va. (May 22, 2022) - Nationally-ranked No. 3 Birmingham-Southern College and Salve Regina University waited over two and a half hours (2:39) during a weather delay in the championship game of the NCAA Division III Baseball Regional hosted by University of Lynchburg at Bank of the James Stadium, before the Panthers (41-8) completed their third 10-2 triumph in the bracket over the Seahawks (30-13-2).

The game had originally been scheduled for 11 a.m. [ET] with an "if necessary" matchup following on Sunday, but Saturday's Game 5 had been postponed after a lengthy delay to its start and moved to the Sunday morning first pitch. Salve Regina (2-2 in the regional) advanced to the championship by staving off elimination with wins against Earlham College (7-6 on Saturday) and the host Hornets (6-3 on Sunday) after a tournament opening defeat to Lynchburg on Friday (7-3).

Young arms and a veteran lineup all played a part in helping the Birmingham-Southern baseball team sweep the Lynchburg Regional. The Panthers now advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The Panthers got the scoring started early plating two runs in the first and taking a 2-0 lead. BSC then added a run in the second after Andrew Dutton reached on a fielder's choice scoring Brian Williams on the play.

Salve Regina got a run back in the fourth inning with Kyle Platt (Bethel, Conn.) plating Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) with a single to left center to cut into the lead but that would be as close as they would get. Birmingham-Southern broke the game open in the fifth inning as they scored six runs on five hits. Jack Fleming and Will Lantis each doubled in the inning.

Salve Regina added a run in the sixth with Tyler Petrosino (Beverly, Mass.) coming home on a wild pitch but that would be the last of the scoring for the Seahawks. The Panthers bullpen held them scoreless the rest of the game.

The Panthers advanced to the Super Regional round for the second time in the Division III era. Four Seahawks received Lynchburg Region All-Tournament team honors for their performances in the regional. Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.), Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.), Patrick Maybach (Saunderstown, R.I.), and Andrew Roman (Monson, Mass.) all were awarded All-Tournament team.
