Summer breezes carried Salve Regina baseball players to more headlines
NEWPORT, R.I. (September 21, 2021) - On the final day of summer, what better time to reminisce about baseball since we last saw the Salve Regina University earn its fourth Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) championship in the last five completed seasons, and advance to the NCAAs.
Browse below for leagues, teams, and Salve Regina baseball players who made headlines around the region and beyond. Not factoring Nicolas Santo returning to his home state (Florida), Sean O'Malley traveled the furthest of any Seahawk, playing his summer baseball in the M.I.N.K. League.
The M.I.N.K. League is comprised of teams from Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas and the league started in 1910 with a six team charter. The M.I.N.K. League teams were Auburn NE, Falls City NE, Clarinda IA, Shenandoah IA, Maryville MO and Nebraska City KS. Today, the league has grown from six teams to eight teams.
All collegiate baseball league athletes are unpaid in order to maintain their NCAA eligibility. Each team is operated in a similar manner to a professional minor league team, providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips and playing nightly before fans in a stadium.
