NEWPORT, R.I. (Wednesday, April 7, 2021) - Sophomore Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) slugged a three-run homer in the fourth inning of Game One of a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) baseball doubleheader to lead Salve Regina University over Western New England University, 4-0, before the teams settled for a 5-5 deadlock after nine innings in the nightcap.
Graduate student Patrick Maybach (Saunderstown, R.I.) scattered six hits over six innings and struck out 10 Golden Bears' batters to earn the victory. Jake Balderston's (Hadley, Mass.) swing and miss to lead off the fifth inning became Maybach's 243rd career strikeout to place him atop the all-time list in Salve Regina baseball history, surpassing Scott Alexander's 242 Ks from 1998 to 2001. Andrew Roman (Monson, Mass.) pitched a perfect seventh in relief.
Outfielder Jared Beniers (Abington, Mass.) drilled an RBI single in the fourth inning as well.
In Game Two, Salve Regina (6-0-1, 5-0-1 CCC) scored single runs in the first and second innings on an RBI groundout by designated hitter Sean O'Malley (Darien, Conn.) and a home run from outfielder Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.), respectively.
Western New England (1-1-1, 0-1-1 CCC) scored three unearned runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead with Balderston and freshman Aaron Cole (Forestdale, Mass.) contributing RBI singles off Seahawk starter Zach Dionne (Tolland, Conn.).
Henry Schwoerer (Stamford, Conn.) added another run-scoring single in the fifth for a 4-2 lead.
The Seahawks took the lead back with three in the fifth including RBI basehits from Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn.) and O'Malley. With another unearned run tying the score in the top of the ninth, the Seahawk pitching staff - Dionne, Dominic Perachi (Washington Depot, Conn.), and Holden Ferrari (Dover, Mass.) - had to settle for no decision despite striking out 16 Golden Bears combined.
Salve Regina has a 10-day layoff before beginning a five-game series with Roger Williams University on April 17.
