NEWPORT, R.I. - The Salve Regina University baseball team hosts Nichols College in the first game of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament.

  • Freshman Jacob Simon picked up his first collegiate victory after throwing five innings and allowing just one run and striking out one.
  • Colton Eremian had two hits in the game, both doubles, with two RBI and a run scored.
  • The Seahawk defense turned three double-plays.

LAST TIME OUT FOR NICHOLS -  WESTFIELD ST. 5, NICHOLS 1 - APRIL 30, 2019

  • The Owls got to the Bison pitching early, plating a run in each of the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
  • Nichols' lone run came in the sixth inning on an RBI single by junior Christian Naccari.
  • Junior Jacob Barresi was on the hook for the loss for Nichols in his first career start, recording two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while picking up one strikeout through 3.1 innings.

BISON BITES

  • Joe Assenza leads the Bison with a .338 batting average and in hits with an even 50 on the season.
  • Junior Christian Naccari was tops on the team in home runs (7) and RBI (41).
    • Naccari's 41 RBI was also tops in the CCC and his seven home runs was in a tie for second in the conference.
  • Freshman Brendan Duffy was No. 1 on the team with a 2.39 ERA across his 52.2 innings pitched, while also striking out 37 batters which is tied for the team lead with junior Jack Dicenso.
    • Duffy's 2.39 ERA is also the third best in the CCC.
  • Five Bison were named to the All-CCC squad.
    • Duffy was named Rookie of the Year and a second team pitcher.
    • Christian Naccari made first team All-CCC.
    • Kyle Bouchard and Joe Assenza made second team.
    • Nathaniel Cormier rounds out the Bison selections with a third team honor.

  • Senior Zach Smith led the Seahawks and the CCC in both batting average (.438) and home runs (8).
    • His 38 RBI led the team and was second in the CCC only to Naccari on the Bison.
    • Smith's 35 runs scored led the Seahawks.
  • Junior Dylan Ketch batted .394 on the season, which was second on the team and in the CCC behind only teammate Smith.
  • Senior lefty Will Ginsberg led the Seahawks pitching staff with 51.2 innings pitched.
  • Sophomore righty Michael Mathews led the Seahawks and tied for the lead in the CCC in strikeouts (59).
  • Smith and Mathews had equal 4-2 records on the season for the Seahawks.
  • Nine different Seahawks earned All-CCC honors.
  • Salve Regina is 48-15 all-time versus Nichols and has won five in a row, and nine of the last ten meetings.
    • Nichols last win in the series was an 8-6 decision in the 2017 postseason. The Seahawks responded with a 10-0 victory to eliminate the Bison.
  • Salve Regina is seeking its fourth straight appearance in the CCC title game. 
    • The Seahawks won back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017 before falling in the championship game to Western New England last season.

WHAT'S UP NEXT

  • The victor of today's game will face top seeded Western New England on Friday, May 3, while the loser faces either Endicott or Gordon in an elimination game.
