NEWPORT, R.I. - The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) has selected Salve Regina University freshman Michael Mathews (West Hartford, Conn.) as its Rookie of the Week for baseball (May 7 - 13).

CCC Rookie of the Week - Mathews turned in a quality start against No. 4 seed Endicott in the Pod A Final of the CCC Baseball Tournament. He went 6-1/3 innings allowing five hits and two earned runs in what ended up being the Seahawks' longest game in program history. The Seahawks won that game in the 13th inning, sending them into the CCC Championship Series. Mathews pitched 1/3 of an inning in the series.

"He had a great start to help propel us into the championship series," says his head coach Eric Cirella. "He threw big innings for us all year and is a guy you will see a lot of in years to come."

Salve Regina (25-15, 12-4 CCC) concluded its season in the best-of-three championship series, falling 7-6 in 12 innings in the final game.
