NEW LONDON, Conn. – Salve Regina University came away with a 19-7 victory over Mitchell College on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball showdown at Alumni Field.

The Seahawks (9-10 overall) finished with 19 hits and benefitted from 10 Mitchell errors. Alex Perry (North Attleboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) went 4-for-5 with a homer, double, three RBI and three runs scored to lead the way. Anthony Cieszko (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) chipped in with three hits and an RBI while Christian Vargas (Melbourne, Fla./Melbourne Central Catholic) knocked in four runs with a pair of hits.

Jeremy Santos (New London, Conn./New London) went 3-for-3 with an RBI to pace Mitchell (17-4 overall). Garet Griffin (Moosup, Conn./Plainfield) and Steven Pagan (Oceanside, Calif./Guajome Park Academy) each contributed two hits and plated a run.

Cieszko put Salve Regina on the board with two outs in the second inning, depositing a single into right field to score Dylan Ketch (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School). The Seahawks then put up three runs in a third inning that included a two-run homer by Perry, his team-leading fourth of the year.

Mitchell came back with six runs in the home half of the third—all with two outs—to vault into the lead. Eric Marriott (Niagara Falls, Canada/A.N. Myer) knocked in two runs with a ground-rule double while Pagan, Markus Melendez (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) and Peter Abate (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) all provided RBI singles.

Mitchell's 6-4 lead didn't last for long as Salve Regina countered with nine runs in the fourth inning to break the game open. The Seahawks sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame and racked up six hits to go with a pair of Mitchell errors. Vargas knocked in three runs with a bases-clearing double while Michael DeFusco (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich) contributed a two-run double to highlight the rally.

The 13-6 lead was more than enough for reliever Michael Mathews (West Hartford, Conn./Conard), who pitched 3.1 innings of shutout ball and struck out six to earn the victory. He improved to 2-1 on the season.

Mitchell will next play at Becker College on Friday, April 13 (time TBA). Salve Regina returns to action at home against Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday, April 14 at noon.
