NEWPORT, R.I. - The Commonwealth Coast Conference has selected Salve Regina University freshman Stephen Cirella (Jamestown, R.I.) as its Rookie of the Week for baseball (March 13-19, 2017).

Rookie of the Week - Cirella helped Salve Regina to a 5-1 week with multi-hit games in three of the Seahawks' five contests. He also drove in six and scored two runs. He was especially instrumental in a four-run, ninth-inning outburst against Spalding, driving in the winning runs in the 4-1 victory. Cirella leads the Seahawks in batting average at .407 through the first nine games.

"It was a pretty solid week for Stephen," said his brother and head coach Eric Cirella. "I'm proud of him because he really got thrown into the fire and, to his credit, keeps finding ways to get a knock or two every game. He has some really good at-bats at times against some talented arms. He just needs to continue to build on the last 10 games and focus on having quality at-bats, squaring up the ball and making good outs when he doesn't get a hit. He's worked very hard in the weight room and with his swing to put himself in a position to contribute on a talented team as a freshman and my hope is that he is just scratching the surface right now and continues to get better as we open up in conference."

Salve Regina (7-2) returned from its Florida trip on Saturday and will travel to UMass Boston on Thursday before entertaining Western New England University on the weekend in the first CCC games of the season.
