NEWPORT, R.I. - The Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) has selected Salve Regina University freshman Zack Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) as its Rookie of the Week for baseball (April 4-10).

Rookie of the Week – Smith had hits in five of six games for the Seahawks this week. He also had three multi-hit efforts. In a game against Rhode Island College on Friday (April 8), Smith hit his first collegiate home run. Smith batted .400 for the week and drove in six runs. He also scored three times and stole two bases.

"Zack had a really solid week for us all around," said Seahawk third-year head coach Eric Cirella. "He is getting more comfortable in the outfield and on the bases, with relation to what we are trying to do as a team. And he is a kid with some real tools, so he is just scratching the surface. Offensively, we have really focused on his preparation for a game and staying with the same approach. He really barreled up some balls this week and should be a staple in the middle of our lineup for the next few years."

Salve Regina (9-8-1; 3-1 CCC) starting pitchers performed well, too, with Billy Humes (East Rockaway, N.Y.) throwing a complete-game shutout on Saturday followed by a combined 19 strikeouts from Tommy Seaver (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Frank Lemieux (Marshfield, Mass.) on Sunday.

The Seahawks have won all three baseball awards this season: Player (John Militano - March 28; Alex Perry - April 11), Pitcher (Cory Poplawski - March 28), and Rookie (Colton Eremian - April 4; Zack Smith - April 11).
