NEWPORT, R.I. - Junior infielder Joe Haley (No. Kingstown, R.I.) had a pair of multi-hit games for Salve Regina University baseball (17-11) on Sunday, but the Seahawks were swept in a non-league doubleheader by visiting Plymouth State University (13-11). The Panthers escaped a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh of game one for a 4-3 victory before winning 7-4 in game two.

Panther shortstop Brandon Cox (Nashua, N.H.) struck a three-run homer in the top of the second of game one and Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) doubled in another run in the top of the fifth as those four runs held up against the Seahawks.

Salve Regina scored single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings, but never led or tied the score after Cox' homerun. Ryan Sweenor (So. Kingstown, R.I.) delivered an RBI single in the Seahawk second; Tyler Colby (Easton, Conn.) added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to score Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) who had earlier singled and stole second in the inning.

Thompson finished game one with three hits. Starting pitcher Josh Young (Somersworth, N.H.) improved to 3-2 on the season while scattering nine hits, all singles, and striking out five Seahawks in five and two-thirds innings.

Dominic Di Sano's (Central Falls, R.I.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first of game two gave Salve Regina its only lead of the afternoon. Plymouth State followed with another three-run second that involved Brandon Cox. Jake Broom (New London, N.H.) doubled in Paul Reny (So. Portland, Maine) and Cox after the Panther middle infielders had back-to-back singles.

Sean Becker (Richmond, Va.) made it a 3-2 game when he drove in Alek Kucich (Old Brookville, N.Y.) in the bottom of the second. After a four-run fifth for the visitors, Colby added another late-inning RBI for the Seahawks.

Junior pitcher Cody Gilchrist (Tyngsboro, Mass.) struck out eight Seahawk batters in a complete-game effort to raise his record to 2-2.

Salve Regina next plays on Tuesday when it hosts Wesleyan University at 4 p.m.; Plymouth State plays at Keene State on Tuesday.
