NEWPORT, R.I. – With the tying run 90 feet away, junior Kevin Lambert (North Kingston, R.I.) got pinch hitter Mark Kerwin (Smithfield, R.I.) to chase a high fastball to end the game as the Salve Regina baseball team defeated Johnson & Wales for its sixth-straight win.

Freshman Ryan Sweenor (South Kingston, R.I.) and sophomore Joe Haley (South Kingston, R.I.) drew back-to-back walks to lead off the eighth for Salve Regina (22-7) with the Seahawks down one run, 11-10. Junior Tyler Colby (Easton, Conn.) was asked to lay down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, but he did one better as he reached safely off a throwing error by the Wildcat shortstop that allowed Sweenor to score from second and tie the game at 11-11. With Haley on third, junior Dominic Di Sano (Central Falls, R.I.) reached first safely on a fielder's choice and Haley came around to score what proved to be the winning run. Sophomore Kory Ferullo (Rochester, N.H.) was able to get his final two outs of the inning, but the damage had been done.

Lambert came in the top of the ninth to try and secure the win for Salve Regina. After getting a quick first out, Lambert issued a walk the Wildcats' most dangerous hitter of the day, senior Pete Rosa (Ambler, Pa.). A groundout and wild pitch moved Rosa, who represented the tying run but Lambert got Kerwin to chase a high 1-2 strike to end the game for his sixth save of the season.

The day started strong for Salve Regina, as the Seahawks took 4-1 lead after the first three innings as Haley and junior Anthony Conte (Georgetown, Mass.) each delivered an RBI single in the first two innings to give Salve Regina a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats got one run back in the top of the third as Rosa sent the first pitch he saw in the game deep over the left field fence. Di Sano answer in the bottom of the third with an RBI-single to get the run back and Haley came around to score on a wild pitch to give SRU the 4-1 lead.
Johnson & Wales (23-11) took its first lead of the game in the very next inning as the Wildcats sent nine batters to the plate with four of them coming around to score. With one out and two on, Rosa kicked off four-straight RBI hits for the Wildcats as JWU took a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
Salve Regina would not be out-done, however, as Sweenor and Haley each drove in a run in the bottom of the fourth to give the lead back to the Seahawks, 6-5. And thus began the marathon of runs. Rosa gave the Wildcats the lead back in the top of the fifth with one swing of the bat as he sent his second home run over the left field fence, this time with a runner on as JWU led 7-6. Salve Regina tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Tim Harris (Southbury, Conn.) collected his only RBI of the game as he brought in Di Sano from third.
JWU plated two more in the top of the sixth off a two-run double for senior Zach Boyes (West Warwick, R.I.) to retake the lead, 9-7. After an unusually quite sixth and top of the seventh, the Seahawks rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to lead, 10-9. Di Sano, junior Nicholas Dell'Anno (Reading, Mass.) and Conte each picked up an RBI in the frame for Salve Regina.
Once again the Wildcats clawed their way back with two runs in the top of the eighth to retake the lead, but Salve Regina scratched out two in the bottom of the frame to get the lead back for the final time in the game.
Conte was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 while driving in two runs and scoring once while Di Sano led the Seahawks with three RBI. Rosa led the Wildcats at the dish, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two home runs.
Sophomore Gabe Cretella (Seymour, Conn.) earned the win for Salve Regina after pitching the eighth while Lambert picked up the save. Ferullo took the loss for Johnson & Wales after coming in from right field to pitch the eighth.
Salve Regina returns to the diamond when the Seahawks get back to Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Gordon on Friday, April 19. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
