Seahawks split with wild Thoroughbreds

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Salve Regina University baseball rallied for three runs in the sixth inning of game one to defeat Skidmore College, 7-5, before falling in the nightcap, 8-3, against the Thoroughbreds in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Seahawks started off scoring in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Joe Haley (North Kingstown, R.I.) that allowed Ryan Kelly (Waldwick, N.J.) to score. After allowing Skidmore to score once in the second inning, the Seahawks came back to score another three runs in the top of the third. The inning was kicked off by a double from Kelly, followed by an RBI single by Daniel Donohue (Westbury, N.Y.) that brought Kelly home. The momentum was continued by Ryan Sweenor (South Kingstown, R.I.) with a double that allowed Donohue to score. Finally Matt Conroy (Philadelphia, Pa.) got an RBI when he grounded out to third base, bringing Sweenor across home plate.

The Thoroughbreds were able to score again in the bottom of the third inning, and both teams were kept from scoring until the bottom of the fifth, when Skidmore scored three times with three singles and a double. The Seahawks retaliated in the top of the sixth, with Kelly and Sweenor able to score on wild pitches. An RBI single from Dominic Di Sano (Central Falls, R.I.) allowed Haley to cross the plate, bringing the team to a lead of 7-5. Both teams were held for the seventh inning, leading the Seahawks to take their fifth win in a row with the final score of 7-5.

Salve Regina ended its winning streak in the second game in the doubleheader against Skidmore. The only Seahawks runs came off the bat of Donohue. An RBI-double in the bottom of the third inning allowed Rich Cianci (Chester, N.J.) and Mark Boland (Orange, Conn.) to score, and Emmett Ravis (South Glastonbury, Conn.) scored in the bottom of the seventh. The Seahawks were kept from scoring by Skidmore pitcher Max Martins, who had 12 strikeouts overall. After a tough game, the Seahawks lost to Skidmore 8-3.
