Tapley tears into Lions pitching with 6-for-6 day at plate

NEWPORT, R.I. - Catcher Brendan Tapley (Narragansett, R.I.) went 6-for-6 at the plate with five RBI and commanded the game behind the plate as Salve Regina University baseball swept a The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) doubleheader from Eastern Nazarene College at Reynolds Field. TCCC Pitcher of the Week Patrick Quinn (Middletown, N.J.) won the opener, 17-2, while Charles Matarazzo (Montville, N.J.) improved to 3-0 with an 11-4 score in the nightcap.

Senior infielder Tom Glynn (Woodbridge, Conn.) doubled in senior shortstop Alexander Melcher (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) for a first-inning run in Game One. Brandon Bursie (Smithfield, R.I.) and Devin Flynn (Auburn, Maine) led off the Seahawk 2nd with consecutive singles. Tapley doubled in Bursie before both he and Flynn scored on a three-run homerun from senior left fielder Matt Capone (Barrington, R.I.).

Glynn had another RBI double in the 2nd. Salve Regina added four more runs in its 3rd inning including another RBI for Glynn.

Quinn, who surrended a solo homer to junior OF Danny Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) in the top of the 3rd, continued to roll while striking out the last two Lions in the 4th.

Seahawk reserves contributed to a five-run outburst in the 6th inning. Nicholas Barrese (Seaside Park, N.J.) led the frame off with a hit-by-pitch. Stephen Collins (Sudbury, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and Daniel Donohue (Westbury, Conn.) singled to load the bases. Nicholas Politelli (Warwick, R.I.) singled in a run before Nicholas Gaj (Pawtucket, R.I.) doubled down the left field line for two more.

Joshua Hohlfelder (Noank, Conn.), a member of the conference-champion men's basketball team, added a run-scoring single before Gaj scored on a passed ball.

Quinn improved to 3-1 while junior Jared Daniels (Smithsburg, Md.) took the loss to fall to 0-4.

A pitchers' duel ensued in Game Two with Matarazzo matching zeroes with Lions' starter Matt Winders (Plymouth, Mass.). Matarazzo recorded strikeouts on seven of his first nine retired batters.

Eastern Nazarene plated the game's first run in the 4th when freshman Max Pugh (San Diego, Calif.) doubled home senior Luke Matthews (Boise, Idaho). Matarazzo stranded Pugh at third base with his eighth strikeout and a line out to left.

Salve Regina exploded for 10 runs in its 5th inning. Bursie led off with a double, stole third, and came home as Capone beat out a grounder to short. Capone stole second and came home when Tapley singled through the right side.

Melcher delivered a two-run double down the right field line and Matarazzo helped himself with a run-scoring double to left center. Quinn had a two-run double over the center fielder's head and he came home with the 10th run of the inning when Tapley delivered his second run-scoring single of the frame to left field.

Salve Regina plays at Gordon College on Monday in a TCCC twinbill while Eastern Nazarene hosts Endicott College on Monday. The Seahawks won a pair of games against Colby-Sawyer College on the Fighting Scots field last week when Gordon traveled down the road to Endicott.
