Week at a Glance: Seahawks • April 22-28, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, April 22, 2024)-- It's the last week of the regular season for several Seahawk spring sports and women's tennis will be celebrating their senior day on Saturday, April 27. 

Last week the women's track and field saw a new record in the women's 100-meter run by freshman Olivia Tacconi. The men's tennis team held their senior day on Saturday, April 20, by honoring Ned Batstone.

MONDAY (Apr. 22)

Women's tennis is at Clark University at 3 p.m. on Monday. When Salve Regina went up against Mount Holyoke on Saturday, April 20, the Seahawks fell 8-1. Kaydin Pinto beat Kate Vavra at No. 5 singles and at No. 3 doubles the pair of Casey Farrell and Pinto were competitive in an 8-6 game. 

TUESDAY (Apr. 23)

Baseball is hosting Johnson & Wales at 3:30 p.m. It was a 3-1 week for Salve Regina last week. The Seahawks broke Clark University 7-5 and Rhode Island College 4-1. In the doubleheader against Wheaton College the Lyons won game one 3-0 but the Seahawks came back for a 7-0 final score in game two. The first and seventh innings were the catalysts for the Seahawk win against Wheaton in game two. Brandon Grover and Evan O'Rourke had a pair of homers in the first inning to kick off the game and a series of singles with the bases loaded allowed the Seahawks to extend the lead in the seventh inning. 

WEDNESDAY (Apr. 24)

Worcester State University will be at Reynolds field on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. start against Seahawk baseball. Since the 1991 season Salve Regina has a win-loss record of 13-8 against Worcester St. with the most recent game a 5-1 win on April 30, 2019. 

The softball team will travel to Roger Williams for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. The Seahawks finished out last week 2-4 with losses to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The team swept the series against Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday, April 16. In game one against the Wildcats Sam Franceschi's double allowed Morganti Bello to score in the first inning but after two Johnson & Wales baserunners made it home by the sixth inning the Seahawks were down 2-1. In the seventh inning Bello doubled to right center leading the way for Emma Medeiros to score. Kylie Lanteri batted a double allowing two more runners to score for a 4-2 final. In game two the Seahawks came from behind once again scoring five runs in the sixth and seventh innings. 

Beginning at 6 p.m. women's lacrosse will play their last game of the regular season against Emerson College at Rotch Field. Mount Holyoke College and Clark University both fell to Salve Regina last week. Alix Madden achieved a hat trick, leading the way to a 13-7 win over Mount Holyoke. Against Clark Edie Threshie and Daniella Bruno emerged as leaders with four and three goals respectively.

THURSDAY (Apr. 25)

Seahawk sailing will be at a regatta hosted by the University of Rhode Island on Thursday. 

Baseball will host Anna Maria College at 3 p.m. Anna Maria, a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, last saw Salve Regina on April 17, 2011. The game was a 6-5 win for Salve Regina. 

FRIDAY (Apr. 26)

For the women's track and field team Friday marks the first day of the NEWMAC championships. Last week Olivia Tacconi broke the school record in the women's 100-meter dash with a time of 12.89. She came in fourth in the event. Isabella Hastings crossed the line second out of 18 in the women's 5000 meters with a time of 18:44.08. Anna Weygang finished in eighth in the women's 1500 meter run with a time of 4:59.63. Avery Braccia ran a personal best in the women's 800 meters in 2:26.63 for a 16th place finish. 

Women's tennis will host Wellesley at 3 p.m. The Blue currently sits at 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC. The program's only NEWMAC loss came in the form of an 8-1 defeat by Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 13. 

The United States Coast Guard Academy invites the Seahawk softball team to Nitchman Field for a 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. doubleheader. Since the 1987 spring season softball is 10-12 in the win-loss category against the Bears. On March 11, 2015, the Seahawks fell to the Bears 8-5. That was the last occasion the institutions faced off in softball.

SATURDAY (Apr. 27)

Day two of the NEWMAC championships will be underway for Salve Regina women's track and field.

The baseball team will be in Northborough, Massachusetts for a 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. doubleheader against Emerson College. The last time the two teams met was on March 10, 2010, and it was a 16-run victory for Salve Regina with a 26-10 final score. Saturday's game will take place at the New England Baseball Complex.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology will travel to Newport for a 12 p.m. women's tennis match at the Antone Academic Center. The Seahawks will be celebrating senior day. Salve Regina will be honoring Casey FarrellGraysen SchererAlexa Stevens and Ellysa Tancrede

The men's lacrosse regular season will culminate on Saturday when the team plays Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. on Roberts Field in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Last week the men's lacrosse team's only game was a 17-8 loss to the Springfield College Pride. Springfield jumped out to an early lead and kept up the momentum throughout the encounter. Daniel NaglieriLiam Cooney and Chris Koltzan each fired off two goals apiece. 

At 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. the softball team will play a doubleheader against Babson College at Toppa Field. The programs have only met on one occasion before heading into Saturday's game. When the Beavers and Seahawks played a doubleheader on April 13, 2022, Salve Regina succumbed 3-0 in game one and 13-5 in game two.
