Week at a Glance: Seahawks • April 8-14, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, April 8, 2024)-- It's a full week for Salve Regina athletics with 22 contests in total at both home and away venues in the next seven days.

MONDAY (Apr. 8)

Women's track and field will open up the week competing at the Regis Spring Classic in Weston, Massachusetts at 1 p.m. The Seahawks come off a week of with no contests but will have a second opportunity to compete this week when they travel to the Jerry Gravel Invitational on Saturday. 

TUESDAY (Apr. 9)

Clark University invites Seahawk Baseball to the Granger Athletic Complex in Worcester, Massachusetts. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m. Last week the team beat Springfield 5-3 at home and tied the series against Coast Guard. In game one against the Bears Tyler Cannoe made it home in the top of the first after Matt D'Amato advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt and an error. Salve Regina was scoreless in the remaining eight innings. In game two the Bears tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Michael Breen and Nate Ruehs crossed home plate in the nineth inning, advancing on teammates singles. Although the Seahawks allowed one more Coast Guard run, Salve Regina outlasted the Bears 6-5.

WEDNESDAY (Apr. 10)

Baseball is back on campus to host Trinity College at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Seahawks are 18-3 overall, and the Bantams are 8-11. When the two teams last saw each other on March 30, 2023 Trinity won 10-7. The Bantams come off a 1-2 three-game series against Colby College. 

Mitchell college and Seahawk softball will play a doubleheader on Toppa Field with game one at 4 p.m. On Friday, April 5, the team swept Wellesley 6-0 and 4-3. The next day Salve Regina fell 10-2 and 7-3 to Smith College. The Seahawks currently sit at 2-4 in the NEWMAC. Against Wellesley pitcher Alex Kelly earned the shutout win. At the bottom of the sixth in game one against Wellesley Salve Regina led 2-0 but Maddie Capetta's double to left center allowed Kylie LanteriKatie Ramos and Morganti Bello to score, making it a 5-0 game. Emily Lane's single led the way for Capetta to also cross the plate for a 6-0 finish. 

At 7 p.m. women's lacrosse hosts Wheaton College at Gaudet Field. Last week the Seahawks took on the Smith College Pioneers on Friday, April 5, but a dominant second quarter by Smith triggered a six-goal run and got the Pioneers ahead 16-8. The following day Salve Regina took on No.20 Babson, and the Beavers wasted no time, scoring 12 goals in the first quarter. Kayli Garcia and Stella McCormack both scored but Babson upheld their ranking to finish 22-2. 

THURSDAY (Apr. 11)

Women's tennis will be at Clark University at 3 p.m. on Thursday for a match. On Sunday, April 7, the Seahawks finished 7-2 against Springfield College. The pair of Casey Farrell and Kaydin Pinto beat the Pride in doubles play 8-7. Farrell also went on to win her singles match against Springfield's Kate Rosselli 6-4. 

FRIDAY (Apr. 12)

The Lions of Emerson College invite Salve Regina softball to Rotch Field in Boston, Massachusetts for a double header. Game one begins at 3 p.m. Since the 1987 spring season the Seahawks have gone 3-2 against the Lions. The last meeting of the foes was on March 05, 2006, and Salve Regina lost 4-0. 

SATURDAY (Apr. 13)

At 10 a.m. sailing will race at a regatta hosted by the University of Rhode Island. 

Women's track and field will be at the Jerry Gravel Invitational at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Jerry Gravel founded the Westfield State track and field program and coached the Owls through the 1999 season. The event takes place at Westfield's Jerry Gravel Track.  

Women's tennis and men's tennis will both be at Wheaton College on Saturday. Women's tennis gets going at 10 a.m. and men's tennis commences at 2 p.m. 

In a lacrosse senior day doubleheader women's lacrosse hosts No.15 Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 11 a.m. and men's lacrosse hosts No.13 Babson College at 2 p.m. at Gaudet Field. Women's lacrosse has no prior record against the Engineers and men's lacrosse has a 1-2 record against the Beavers since the spring 2009 season. 

Babson College baseball will also be in town for a 12 p.m. doubleheader against Salve Regina at Reynolds Field. The Beavers sit at 13-6 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The last time Salve Regina and Babson met for a baseball matchup on May 20, 2017, the Beavers won 5-4.

Softball faces Clark University on Toppa Field in a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch of game one is at 12 p.m. The only time the Cougars and Seahawks have rivaled each other in the past was on March 06, 2007. The Cougars came away with an 8-1 win. 

SUNDAY (Apr. 14)

The sailing team races at 10 a.m. on Sunday at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. 

To close out the busy week of athletic contests men's and women's tennis will travel to Boston, Massachusetts to face Emerson College. The women's tennis match begins at 10:30 a.m. and the men's match starts at 2 p.m.
