Week at a Glance: Seahawks • March 4-10, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, March 4, 2024)-- The Seahawks prepare for spring break with four different teams traveling at the end of the week. 

Last week men's ice hockey competed with Endicott College in the Commonwealth Coast Conference finals. The gulls scored early on a penalty shot. Damon Zimmer tied the game 1-1, breaking away down the ice to score with no defenders in sight at 6:54 in the second period. However, it was Endicott that scored in the final minute of the second period resulting in a 2-1 win for the Gulls. Salve Regina ended the season with an overall record of 17-9-2 and a 10-6-2 conference record.

TUESDAY (Mar. 5)

Women's lacrosse starts out the week by hosting UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. at Gaudet Field. Last week the team snuck by Emmanuel College for a 13-12 victory with the help of freshman Alix Madden who netted the game winning goal with 8:36 remaining. Both Edie Threshie and Samantha Moleti achieved hat tricks. Cameron Baston scored twice, provided one assist, caused two turnovers and had four draw controls to earn her NEWMAC Co-Defensive Athlete of the Week. 

WEDNESDAY (Mar. 6)

Wesleyan University will host men's lacrosse at 4:30 p.m. on their home field in Middletown, Connecticut. The Seahawks attained their first win of the season last week against Kean University. Justin DeBalsi netted four goals for the Seahawks while Daniel Naglieri scored three times. Goalie Andrew Hazard made 12 saves. Kieran Hughes went 19 of 24 on face-offs and picked up 12 ground balls to secure the 13-10 victory over Kean and earn NEWMAC Face-Off Specialist of the Week. 

FRIDAY (Mar. 8)

At 6 p.m. women's lacrosse will play Eastern Connecticut State University on Rick McCarthy Field in Mansfield, Connecticut. Since the 2009-10 season Salve Regina is 3-4 against Eastern Connecticut. February 25, 2020, was the last time the foes contended. Salve Regina came away with a 14-11 win over the Warriors.

SATURDAY (Mar. 9)

Baseball starts off spring break in Auburndale, Florida with two games on Saturday. The team takes on Ohio Northern University at 12:30 p.m. and the University of Mount Union at 3:45 p.m. The Seahawks are 5-1, only falling to Stockton University at the Matt Kurkjian ALS Awareness Invitational in Washington, D.C. Last week Salve Regina swept the University of Southern Maine in a three-game series. On the first instance, Christian Homa's three-run third-inning home run helped drive the 7-3 win and earned him NEWMAC Athlete of the Week. In game two of the Southern Maine series Michael Breen's right-side single brought Brandon Grover home with the walk-off run. 

SUNDAY (Mar. 10)

Both men's tennis and women's tennis will be in Orlando, Florida for competitions over spring break. The men's tennis team will play Illinois State University at 7:30 a.m. Both tennis teams contend with Piedmont University at 12:30. With the transition to the NEWMAC women's tennis has shifted their championship season to the spring. Now both men's tennis and women's tennis will be spring championship sports. 

The sailing team will be competing at Tufts University and a portion of the team will stay in Newport to host a regatta. Both events will kick off at 10 a.m.

Softball travels to Tucson, Arizona for the week. Their first contest begins at 12 p.m. EST (9 a.m. MST) and it's against Eastern Connecticut State University. The second game of the day begins at 2 p.m. EST (11 a.m. MST) against Webster University. The Seahawks enter 2024 coming off an 18-24 overall season in 2023. 

Baseball will go up against the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh at 3:45 p.m. to finish out the week. The last time Salve Regina played Wisconsin Oshkosh was on March 22, 2016, and it was a 10-9 loss. The Titans are 3-2 in 2024.
