Week at a Glance: Seahawks • February 26-March 3, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, February 26, 2024)--The Seahawks won six games last week, including the men ice hockey 7-2 upset over top CCC seed, Curry College. 

Salve Regina men's ice hockey is headed to the Commonwealth Coast Conference finals on Saturday, March 2. The team will play the second seed, Endicott College, at 2 p.m. If the Seahawks come away with the win the program will receive an automatic qualifier bid to the NCAA tournament.

WEDNESDAY (Feb. 28)

Women's lacrosse will host Emmanuel College at 7 p.m. at Gaudet Field. Last week Salve Regina beat Simmons University 6-4 at their home opener and Elms College 18-1 three days later. After a 2-0 opening week, junior goalie Grace Haesche was named NEWMAC defensive athlete of the week for February 19-25, 2024. Haesche made seven saves on 11 shots on goal for a save percentage of 63.6 versus Simmons and posted seven saves on eight shots on goal for a save percentage of 87.5 versus Elms. Haesche has an overall save percentage of 73.7 in 2024. 

FRIDAY (March 1)

Baseball plays the first game of a three-game series at home against the University of Southern Maine on Friday at 1 p.m. Last week baseball began their season going 2-1 at the Matt Kurkjian ALS Awareness Invitational in Washington, D.C. On opening day, the Seahawks blanked the Catholic University Cardinals 6-0. The following day the team fell 9-5 to Stockton University, but the Seahawks bounced back for a 14-2 trouncing over Western New England University during game three. 

SATURDAY (March 2)

Sailing will begin the day at 10 a.m. when the program races at the Rhody the Riveter regatta. 

Baseball plays a double header against the University of Southern Maine on Saturday. Game one is at 11 a.m. and game two will begin at 2:30 p.m. Baseball has a record of 5-3 against Southern Maine since the 2000-01 season. The last time the teams met on May 7, 2023, it was a 6-4 victory for Salve Regina. The last four meetings against the Huskies have been favorable for the Seahawks.

At 1 p.m. men's lacrosse will play Kean University at Alumni Stadium in Union, New Jersey. To begin their season the Seahawks fell 10-11 to the Roger Williams University Hawks and yielded 8-7 to SUNY Maritime despite scoring three consecutive goals in the final fifteen minutes. Since the 2019-20 season the Seahawks and Cougars have seen each other twice, both were wins for Kean. The Cougars only have one game on record in 2024 and it was a 20-9 loss to Skidmore College. 

The CCC men's ice hockey finals will begin at 2 p.m. in Beverly, Massachusetts when the Seahawks play the Endicott Gulls at the Raymond J. Bourque Arena. This is the second time the Seahawks have ever progressed to the CCC championships since joining the conference in 2017. The last time the Seahawks and Gulls competed in a men's ice hockey championship was the ECAC Northeast contest in 2016. Last year the teams faced off in the CCC semifinals and Salve Regina fell 5-4. The Gulls enter the game after defeating the University of New England 3-2 in overtime in the semifinals.
