Week at a Glance: Seahawks • February 12-18, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, February 12, 2024)--The Seahawks celebrate Valentine's Day with the start of the men's lacrosse season. 

Last week men's ice hockey won both of their CCC contests. On Friday, February 8, Salve Regina defied Suffolk 6-4 and the following Sunday the team capped Wentworth at one goal for the evening, beating the Leopards 7-1.

WEDNESDAY (Feb. 14)

At 6 p.m. women's basketball plays NEWMAC foe, the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. Last week the Seahawks fell 75-59 to Springfield College and 86-82 to Clark University. Against Clark Sofia Neary lead Salve Regina in points (19) and rebounds (13). Morgan Shuey topped the assist category with ten. 

Men's basketball hosts Coast Guard at 7 p.m. at the Rodgers Recreation Center on Wednesday. The team played Babson College on February 10, and the Beavers surged ahead 63-49. Babson outscored the Seahawks 30-16 in the first half but both teams posted 33 points in the second. Declan Walmsley and Sean Seymour both scored 12 points as Salve Regina's high scorers. 

FRIDAY (Feb. 16)

To start the day off the men's ice hockey team plays the last game of their regular season at 7 p.m. in Biddeford, Maine against the University of New England. Last week against Suffolk University Matthew FawcettWalter Baumann and Parker Mabbett's third period goals elevated the Seahawks to a 6-4 win. On Sunday, February 11, Johnny Mulera and Baumann scored in the first two minutes against Wentworth. Salve Regina allowed one Leopard goal but put a stopped it there. The Seahawks racked up five more goals in the remaining periods for a 7-1 trouncing. Head Coach Zech Klann entered the Wentworth matchup with a career record of 99-49-10. The victory over the Leopards brought coach Klann to his 100th career win. 

Women's ice hockey invites UNE to the Cabot-Harman Ice Center for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. Last week Salve Regina fell 4-3 in overtime to the Suffolk Rams. Although Ashtyn Bringardner, Maddie Cox and Gina Richard all scored in regulation, it was Suffolk that netted the final goal at 2:16 into overtime. 

SATURDAY (Feb. 17)

Massachusetts Institute of Technology makes the trip to the Rodgers Recreation Center for a women's basketball matchup at 1 p.m. The last time the Seahawks saw the Engineers was on January 09, 2003, and it was a 62-37 success. MIT is currently ranked third in NEWMAC standings behind first place, Smith College, and Springfield College in second place. 

Men's lacrosse hosts Western Connecticut State University at Toppa Field at 2 p.m. in nonconference action. Salve Regina was ranked fifth in the NEWMAC preseason poll released on February 9. The Seahawks enter their first season competing in the NEWMAC coming of an 11-7 overall and 6-2 CCC record in 2023. The Seahawks most recently played the Wolves on February 21, 2023, and fell 16-7. In 2023 WestConn went 16-5 overall and 7-1 in the Little East Conference and went on to win the conference championship. 

Tipoff is at 3 p.m. for men's basketball when the Seahawks take on the Emerson College Lions in Boston, Massachusetts. Emerson outscored Salve Regina by two points in a 60-58 contest on January 18. Emerson is 10-13 overall and 6-8 in the NEWMAC. The Seahawks come in at 10-13 overall and 4-10 in conference. 

Women's ice hockey will be in Harrisville, Rhode Island at the June Rockwell Levy Rink for a 4:40 faceoff against Nichols College. The Seahawks have gone head-to-head against the Bison twice this season already. On January 25 Salve Regina overcame a 2-0 deficit for a 4-2 victory over Nichols. The following day the Seahawks rendered the Bison scoreless for a 2-0 final.
