Week at a Glance: Seahawks • January 29-February 4, 2024

NEWPORT, R.I. (Monday, January 29, 2024)--The Seahawks will be competing in seven contests this week with three of them taking place at home. 

Last week Seahawk teams won four games. Women's basketball started it off with a 92-87 victory over Emerson College. Following suit, women's ice hockey beat Nichols College twice, 4-2 on the first occasion and 2-0 two days later. Men's ice hockey finished it out with a 3-2 overtime win topping Nichols.

WEDNESDAY (Jan. 31)

At 7 p.m. women's basketball will tipoff against Wheaton College at the Haas Athletic Center. In the team's victory over Emerson last week, Senior Briana Neary achieved a career-high 38 points. Sophomore Sofia Neary led the team in rebounds (9) and Morgan Shuey topped the assist category (11). 

Men's basketball will be at Springfield College for a 7 p.m. NEWMAC tipoff. After falling 86-47 to Clark University and narrowly fading to an 86-81 loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology the team has another opportunity to see a NEWMAC competitor. This season Salve Regina is 10-10 overall and 4-7 in the NEWMAC. The Springfield Pride is 6-13 overall and 3-7 in the conference.

FRIDAY (Jan. 2)

Curry College will host women's ice hockey at 7 p.m. at the Canton Ice House. Salve Regina moved to 10-7-3 overall and 7-5-1 in the CCC after last week's victories over Nichols. Freshman Gina Richard scored her first collegiate hat trick during the first contest and Freshman Emily Wroblewski made the game winning goal. 

Men's ice hockey will be at home on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop against Curry. The team went 1-1 against Nichols last week, falling 3-2 in overtime on Friday, January 26. The following day the Seahawks came back for a 3-2 overtime win, besting the Bison. Senior captain Johnny Mulera netted the game winning goal at 29 seconds into the five-minute overtime. The last four men's ice hockey games have progressed to overtime. 

SATURDAY (Jan. 3)

At 1 p.m. women's basketball will go head to head with the Wellesley College Blue at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse. Since the 2012-13 season the Seahawks have gone 2-1 against the Blue. The last contest took place on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, and it was a 57-49 win. Women's basketball is 9-10 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC. Wellesley is 7-10 in 2023-24 and 0-5 in the NEWMAC. The Blue will be holding senior day and National Girls and Women in Sports Day in conjunction with the game. 

Men's basketball hosts Wheaton at the Rodgers Recreation Center at 1 p.m. Saturday's contest marks the 23rd all-time meeting of the Seahawks and Lyons dating back to the 1989-90 season. Salve Regina is 7-15 all-time against Wheaton with the most recent meeting a 75-64 loss on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. 

The men's ice hockey team will be in Milton, Massachusetts visiting Curry at 3 p.m. The team is 11-18-3 against Curry since the 2007-08 season. Curry currently stands at 10-3 in the CCC and 15-4-1 overall. The teams' last meeting was on Friday, February 03, 2023, and Curry topped Salve Regina 4-3. 

Salve Regina women's ice hockey hosts the Western New England Golden Bears at 7 p.m. at the Cabot-Harman Ice Center. The Golden Bears and Seahawks have already faced off twice this season. Earlier this month on Friday, January 12, 2024, Salve Regina fell 6-2, however the following day the team counteracted WNE for a 3-2 overtime win. Captain Maddie Cox score the game winning goal at 2:59 in the five-minute period.
