Week at a Glance: Seahawks • November 13-19, 2023

NEWPORT, R.I. (November 6, 2023) – The Seahawks have a full week with four home games out of 14 total competitions. Last week Salve Regina won six contests.

In women's cross country news, freshman Isabella Hastings qualified for the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championships. Hastings was one of just seven individual qualifiers for the event. 

The football team's NEWMAC season is over, however Salve Regina will be hosting the New England Bowl on Saturday. Football ended their season in second place in the NEWMAC with a 6-1 in-conference record. The team's only loss was to Springfield College, who received the conference's automatic qualifier bid to the post season NCAA Division III Championship first round.

TUESDAY (Nov. 14) 

Men's ice hockey travels to New Haven, Connecticut to play Albertus Magnus at 5 p.m. Last week was a 2-0 week for the team. The Seahawks played a two-game series against the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards, winning game one 5-2 and game two 3-1. On Friday Matthew Fawcett made the first goal of the day 23 seconds in to period two and the Seahawks kept it going in the third period when Jonathan Hammel (full strength), Johnny Mulera (power play), Josh Kroon (full strength) and Aidan Coupe (power play, empty net) all sent the puck between the posts. The action on Saturday began with 19 minutes into the contest when Seth Benson got the Seahawks on the board. Logan Calder scored on a Salve Regina power play in period two and Walter Baumann earned the team their final goal of the day. The Leopards fought back however, when they team took advantage of a power play opportunity and pulled their goalie to earn their only goal of the night. 

At 7 p.m. men's basketball will go head-to-head with UMass Boston on the Beacons's home court. Last week Salve Regina opened the season against Johnson & Wales 79-46. The Seahawks quickly emerged on top, reaching 24-2 with ten minutes gone on the score board. James Jolly lead the Seahawks' scoring efforts with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Clay Brochu, Miles Fiore and Declan Walmsley followed Jolly's charge with 17, 14 and 13 points respectively. 

WEDNESDAY (Nov. 15) 

Women's basketball holds their second home game of the season at 7 p.m. against UMass Dartmouth. During opening week Salve Regina bested Johnson & Wales 77-51 and fell 81-77 to Salem State University. Sofia Neary scored the first basket of the day and posted a game-high 18 points against the Wildcats. On Saturday the Seahawks lead by one point after quarter one and quarter three, however two field goals and a three-point basket Salem St. extended the Viking lead to 66-60. Ashley Rourke, Briana Neary and Sofia Neary brought the game back to a 69-69 tie, yet the Vikings inched ahead with a series of layups and two free throws to finish the game. 

FRIDAY (Nov. 17) 

The only home contest on Friday takes place at the St. Georges School ice rink when men's ice hockey hosts Western New England University at 7 p.m. The Seahawks are 31-9 against the Golden Bears. Last February, when the team's met most recently, Salve Regina came away with a 5-2 victory. This season the Golden bears are 2-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in-conference. 

Women's ice hockey will be on the road in Biddeford, Maine against the University of New England at 7 p.m. Last week the team played only once, against Albertus Magnus, and it resulted in a 4-0 Falcon shutout. Emily Wroblewski started the show with a goal 16:27 into the game and was followed shortly thereafter by a goal from Jennifer Rickard. Neither team scored during the second period but, the Seahawks made up for the lack of action in period two with two additional goals (Samantha McKenzie and Jillian Egan) in the final 20 minutes of the matchup. 

For day one of the Curry College tournament, the Autism Acceptance Classic, men's basketball heads to Milton, Massachusetts to take on Regis College at 7 p.m. Salve Regina has seen Regis five times since 2008, winning three out of the five games. In 2011, when the Seahawks last dueled with the Pride, Salve Regina won 62-58. This season the Pride have only had once chance to test their skills, falling 71-56 to the Trinity College Bantams. 

Women's basketball will also participate in a neutral site game on Friday as part of the University Western New England tournament. The women take on Vassar College at 8 p.m. in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Seahawks haven't seen Vassar in the recent past, giving both programs the opportunity to earn the first all-time win-loss success. This year the Brewers are 1-0 after a 72-59 win over Montclair State University. 

SATURDAY (Nov. 18) 

The University of Rhode Island is hosting an equestrian show at Hunter Ridge in Ashaway, Rhode Island and the Seahawks will compete beginning at 9 a.m. Last Saturday Salve Regina earned their highest point total this season with a third place finish. 

Isabella Hastings will represent the women's cross country program at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country Championships in Newville, Pennsylvania on the campus of Big Spring High School on Saturday. Hastings finished 34th at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship with a time of 22:19.70, just under two minutes faster than her first colligate 6,000-meter race, which she completed in 24:08.71. After Saturday's finish she is now second in the all-time Salve Regina women's cross country 6,000-meter records. Hastings will cross the starting line at noon on November 18. 

Salve Regina football and Anna Maria College kick off at noon on Saturday. The Seahawks hosted the inaugural New England Bowl in 2016 and fell 37-34 to Framingham State University. Last week the Seahawks earned another win in a successful 8-2 season. Salve Regina triumphed 38-0 over Norwich University to end the regular season and achieve a program-best fourth shutout of the year. Jake Stack completed 24 passes for a total of 333 yards, contributing to three touchdowns. Wide receivers Andre Sullivan, Christopher Tall and Josh Letellier secured Stack's passes for the touchdown. 

Women's ice hockey is at home on Saturday against the University of New England at 7 p.m. The programs met three times during the 2022-23 season and the first two games resulted in a loss for the Seahawks, however Salve Regina rallied and bested the Nor'easters 2-1 in February of 2023. 

Men's basketball proceeds to day two of the Autism Acceptance Classic with tipoff against Curry at 3 p.m. Last January Salve Regina defeated Curry 78-66, bringing them to 36-22 all-time. Curry has only played one game in the 2023-24 season, and the result was a 63-58 win over Lesley College. 

Day two of the women's basketball Western New England tournament will commence at either noon or 2 p.m. against Keystone College of Western New England depending on results from the previous day. 

SUNDAY (Nov. 19) 

To finish off the week men's ice hockey will be away in Springfield, Massachusetts at 6 p.m. against Western New England.
