Week at a Glance: Seahawks • October 23-29, 2023

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 23, 2023) – For the Seahawks, this week will feature four home contests, the NEWMAC Championships for men's and women's cross country, and the first men's and women's ice hockey games of the official season. 

Last week Salve Regina field hockey added another win to their NEWMAC total after a 6-0 victory over Clark University. Women's soccer also had a successful week with a 1-0 win over Wheaton College, which was a NEWMAC win for the program.

TUESDAY (Oct. 24) 

The women's volleyball team will start off the week for Salve Regina with an away contest in Norton, Massachusetts against the Wheaton Lyons. This will be the team's 23rd game of 2023 and after the contest only four matches remain in the regular season. The Seahawks played the Cardinals of Wesleyan University last Friday, October 20 and lost 3-0 to the current No. 1 ranked school in the NESCAC. Siena DeCicco, Kate Murphy and Brighton Solheim were the game leaders for Salve Regina. DeCicco had ten digs and 17 assists, Murphy had seven digs and three assists and Solheim had six kills. The Wheaton Lyons are 11-11 and 3-5 in-conference.

WEDNESDAY (Oct. 25)  

Both men's and women's soccer will have contests on Wednesday. Men's soccer will be at home on Toppa field at 7 p.m. against Wheaton and women's soccer will be in New London, Connecticut to take on the United States Coast Guard Academy at 7 p.m. Last week men's soccer tied twice. The first instance was a 1-1 tie against Coast Guard and the second tie was a 2-2 final against Emerson College. Aaron Muncaster scored the only goal of the day against Coast Guard, tying the game with just over ten minutes to go in the contest. Liam Berlingieri and Michael Manousos were the Seahawk scorers against Emerson.

After their 1-0 win over Wheaton last week and 3-2 loss to Babson College, women's soccer is 4-7-4. Hannah Daniewicz scored the game winning goal against Wheaton at 8:28 into the game last Wednesday. During the Babson matchup, Allie Gallagher got the Seahawks on the board after two Beaver goals. Gallagher's goal was matched by Babson's Olivia Maltbie. Sara Wiejkus scored at 80:58, however it still was the Beavers with the 3-2 win. 

THURSDAY (Oct. 26) 

Field hockey has two more games left in the regular season, the first of which will take place in Springfield, Massachusetts against Western New England University at 7 p.m. Seahawk field hockey is 9-5 overall and 4-4 in NEWMAC action. The Western New England matchup will not be a NEWMAC contest, however it will be an exciting matchup with the series history being 16-10. In the Clark shutout last week Julia Decker opened up the day and was followed by Elizabeth Clark, Georgia Costello, Shannon Kennedy, Liv Santiago and Ashley Harvey. Elizabeth Clark also contributed in the 1-0 loss against WPI last Saturday.

FRIDAY (OCT. 27) 

Men's ice hockey will travel to Buffalo, New York on Friday for a two-day tournament. Salve Regina goes up against Arcadia University on Friday at 3 p.m. and based off the results will either play Kings College or Buffalo State University on Saturday at 3 p.m. or 7 p.m. Last week the Seahawks played Endicott College and Salem State University in preseason scrimmages. The Buffalo State tournament serves as the season-opener for Salve Regina. 

SATURDAY (OCT. 28) 

The day starts for the Seahawks in Warren, Rhode Island when equestrian travels to a show hosted by Brown University at 9 a.m. Sailing will begin their day with two regattas beginning at 10 a.m. The events are hosted by in Boston, Massachusetts by Boston University and Medford, Massachusetts by Tufts University. 

Women's cross country and Men's cross country will get to put all their racing to the test on Saturday at the NEWMAC Championships. The men's 8,000-meter race goes off at 11 a.m. and the women begin their 6,000-meter race at 12 p.m. On the women's side Isabella Hastings has consistently been in the top Salve spot and for the men, Shane Behn has been the team leader. The event is hosted by Smith College, and the Seahawks had the chance to race the course earlier in the season at the Smith Invitational. Historically the Smith course has featured a 5,000-meter race for the women and an 8,000-meter race for the men. This will be the first year the Smith course will feature a 6,000-meter race. 

Also beginning at noon is the women's soccer versus Wellesley contest on Reynolds Field. The Seahawks and the Blue do not have a recent record, meaning neither team is favored going into the game. Wellesley is 3-5-5 and 2-3-4 in-conference; however this will change before the Saturday contest as the Blue play Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Wednesday, October 25. 

The last game of the regular season for Salve Regina field hockey is in Cambridge, Massachusetts against MIT at 1 p.m. The Engineers are 11-4 and 7-1 in-conference. Most recently MIT lost 5-2 to the Babson Beavers and will see Roger Williams before hosting Salve Regina on Saturday. 

Seahawk football will be hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 1 p.m. this upcoming weekend. After last week's 31-21 loss to Springfield College Salve Regina is ranked third in the NEWMAC behind Springfield (No. 1) and United States Merchant Marine Academy (No. 2). The Seahawks trailed the Pride 24-0 but made a comeback in the second half of the game, however it wasn't quite enough for Salve Regina to pull even with Springfield. In total the Seahawks passed 160 yards and covered 77 yards rushing. Jake Stack completed 17 of 26 passes and Thomas Cea Jr. covered 54 yards rushing. WPI is No. 6 in the NEWMAC and is 1-3 in-conference. In series history, the Engineers and the Seahawks are tied 1-1. The last meeting of the teams was in 2010 and was a 6-3 win for Salve Regina. 

Springfield hosts men's soccer at 1 p.m. and is currently ranked No. 6 in the NEWMAC with a 1-3-3 conference record and a 4-6-5 overall record. The last time the Seahawks saw the Pride was in 2008 and was a 2-0 loss, however in 2007 the Seahawks won 2-1. 

As part of a tri-match, women's volleyball will play Westfield State University at 1 p.m. and Plymouth State University at 3 p.m. Westfield St. is 5-0 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Plymouth State is 7-0 in the Little East Conference. 

The women's ice hockey season-opener will take place on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Johnson & Wales University. The teams have already seen each other in 2023 for a preseason scrimmage at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island. However, Saturday's game will give both teams the opportunity to meet again and test the training they have done in the past week. Men's ice hockey will continue for day two of the Buffalo State tournament. 


Women's basketball, men's basketball and men's lacrosse all have scrimmages this weekend that do not count towards their season records. Women's basketball plays Anna Maria College at home at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Men's lacrosse has a play day on Sunday, October 29 at Gaudet Field beginning at 9 a.m. and men's basketball plays the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, Connecticut at noon.
