Week at a Glance: Seahawks • October 16-22, 2023

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 16, 2023) – Fall sports are preparing for postseason competition and winter sports are getting ready for action at Salve Regina. This week there will be five home contests in Newport, Rhode Island and the surrounding area.

Women's cross country and men's cross country are the first two teams to compete for NEWMAC titles when they travel to Northampton, Massachusetts in two weeks for the NEWMAC Championship Meet.

Notably, last week men's soccer beat Westfield State University 5-1 and field hockey delivered two shutouts. The first win for Seahawk field hockey was a distinctive 7-0 success over the Dean College Bulldogs and the second win came in the form of a 3-0 triumph over NEWMAC school, Mount Holyoke College. Salve Regina men's soccer has a record of 6-8 this season but has yet to achieve its first win in the NEWMAC. Field hockey is 8-4 overall and 3-3 in conference wins and losses.

TUESDAY (Oct. 17)

The opening game of the week will be a home contest for Seahawk field hockey against the Clark University Cougars on Gaudet Field at 6:30 p.m. After a week with two shutouts, two seahawks were named NEWMAC players of the week. Sophomore forward Julia Decker was the offensive player of the week and junior goalkeeper Bryn Protheroe was named defensive player of the week. Decker scored three goals against Dean and two goals against Mount Holyoke. Protheroe started both of last week's contests and made twelve saves. The Seahawks are 1-4 against the Cougars after a 3-2 loss in 2022.

The United States Coast Guard Academy hosts Salve Regina volleyball in New London, Connecticut at 7 p.m. Last week volleyball fell 3-0 to Smith College and Babson College. Babson is tied with Springfield College at the top of the NEWMAC standings with a 7-0 conference record, and Smith is in the fourth place spot with a 5-2 conference record. Senior outside hitter/opposite Brighton Solheim had 18 kills last week, sophomore middle hitter Lydia Daskalos made four blocks against Smith and senior middle hitter Sydney Ramsey provided four blocks against Babson.

WEDNESDAY (Oct. 18)

Women's ice hockey will play its second and final scrimmage before the regular season starts against Johnson & Wales University at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island on Wednesday at 3:55 p.m. The first unofficial contest of the season took place on Sunday, October 15, against Albertus Magnus College and was a 4-3 win in overtime for the Seahawks. Taylor Stirling, Gina Richard, Jessica McPherson and Emily Wroblewski all scored against the Falcons. It was Wroblewski who scored the game winning goal with a first assist from Riley Esposito and a second assist from Stirling.

The next contest of the day takes place at 4 p.m. when Wheaton College travels to Reynolds Field in a home contest for Seahawk women's soccer. The team fell 3-1 to Clark and 3-0 to Massachusetts Institute of Technology last week. It was sophomore forward Sara Wiejkus who scored for the Seahawks against Clark. Wiejkus was assisted by sophomore back Ella Cence. Salve Regina hasn't seen the Wheaton Lyons since 2013, which was a 3-0 loss for the Seahawks. The Lyons are 3-10-1 overall this season and 1-6 in conference games.

Men's soccer will be on the road Wednesday for a Matchup against Coast Guard at 7 p.m. In the team's 5-1 win over Westfield St. last week five different athletes scored. Neither team scored until 34:20 into the game when sophomore midfielder Ben Tomas put the Seahawks on the board. Freshman striker Daniel Goba also scored in the first half. Senior back Nathan Costantino, junior midfielder Daniel Bond and graduate midfielder Michael Manousos brought the Seahawks home with goals in the second half.

THURSDAY (Oct. 19)

The only Salve Regina contest taking place on Thursday takes place when the men's ice hockey team travels to take on Endicott in a preseason scrimmage in Beverly, Massachusetts at 7 p.m. This will be the team's first chance to test the work they put in during the offseason. Last year the Seahawks were 15-10-1 and 12-8-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.

FRIDAY (OCT. 20)

Women's volleyball hosts New England Small College Athletic Conference institution, Wesleyan University, at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Rodgers Recreation Center. The teams have not played since Salve Regina's 3-1 loss in 2012. Wesleyan is 15-1 overall in 2023 and most recently beat Bowdoin College 3-1. The Cardinals' defeat came after a 3-1 loss to New York University on October 1.

SATURDAY (OCT. 21)

The Engineers of Worcester Polytechnic Institute will play Seahawk field hockey at noon on Gaudet Field Saturday. Salve Regina will celebrate senior day. WPI is 5-7 overall and 4-3 in NEWMAC action. Most recently WIP beat Wheaton 1-0 on October 14, but fell 2-1 to MIT on October 7. The Seahawks have not yet played MIT but the team beat Wheaton 4-1 on October 3.

Last week was an off week for football, however this week they're back in action with an away NEWMAC contest against Springfield College at noon. Football is having a successful 5-1 season. The team is 3-0 in NEWMAC wins and losses and the program's only loss comes from a 17-10 slip to the University of Rochester Yellowjackets. Springfield and Salve Regina last met in 2003 which resulted in a 38-7 loss for the Seahawks. The Pride is also 5-1 overall and 3-0 in-conference, which means the winning team could climb to the top of the NEWMAC standings.

Women's soccer also has its senior day on Saturday for the team's contest against the Babson College Beavers on Reynolds Field at noon. Babson is 7-5-2 this season after tying with Johnson & Wales University 1-1 and Wellesley College 2-2. In 2016 when the Seahawks and the Beavers last met up the Beavers claimed a 2-0 win.

Emerson College is hosting men's soccer at 1 p.m. in Boston, Massachusetts for a conference game. The Emerson Lions are 0-3-1 in conference results this season after losing to Springfield 2-0, WPI 1-0 and Babson 3-0. Men's soccer has not seen Emerson in recent history, giving the Seahawks a blank slate against the Lions.

The men's ice hockey team has its second preseason exhibition matchup against Salem State University on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Seahawks are 0-1 against the Vikings but have not seen Salem St. since 2012 making neither team the favored contender.
