Week at a Glance: Seahawks ? October 4-10, 2021

NEWPORT, R.I. (October 4, 2021) - Salve Regina University welcomes Johnson & Wales University back to Newport to resume a women's volleyball match that started on September 15 and was halted after two sets completed (1-1).

TUESDAY (Oct. 5)
Salve Regina women's tennis (2-4, 2-3 CCC) serves up the first match of the week when it hosts UMass Dartmouth at the courts adjacent to the Antone Academic Center (3 p.m.). It will be the first meeting between the Seahawks and Corsairs since 2015, when Salve Regina won 6-3 to improve to 12-7 in the all-time series. Second-year Seahawk Ellysa Tancrede won her fifth straight singles match on Saturday when the Seahawks hosted the Bison on Senior Day for Annemarie Haas and Abigail Scharpf. Seahawk head coach Bruce Levine: "Our players continue to improve on the court in practice and match play. And more importantly, they're coming together as a team!"

Seahawk field hockey (6-4, 0-3 CCC) fields another non-league game and travels to Willimantic, Conn., to face the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University (4:30 p.m.). The Seahawks are 4-3 in the all-time series with the Warriors (started in 1999) and have won all four meetings at home while they are seeking their first triumph in Willimantic. Salve Regina is 2-1 in 2021 road games and looks to end a three-game losing skid. Eliza Timms still stands atop the list of goal scorers (11) and points (26) in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) while no other goaltender in the league has more saves than Olivia Butler (58).

Salve Regina women's volleyball (7-5, 2-1 CCC) hosts Gordon College at the Rodgers Recreation Center (7 p.m.). The Seahawks are 11-9 in the all-time series with the Fighting Scots with 11 wins in the last dozen meetings; in those last 12 matches, Salve Regina has won 34 of 39 sets. Nicole Karabaich ranks third in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) in kills per set (3.35) while Kate Murphy and Katelyn O'Brien also take the third spot in digs (184) and assists per set (8.54), respectively.

WEDNESDAY (Oct. 6)
Both Seahawk soccer programs come off wins on Saturday against Curry College at different home venues. They'll return to those same venues on Wednesday at different times.

Erin Harnish and her fellow seniors were honored before their home match with the Colonels. Harnisch kept the spotlight with an assist and two goals in a 3-0 CCC victory. Salve Regina women's soccer (6-5, 2-1 CCC) hosts the UMass Boston Beacons at Reynolds Field (3:30 p.m.) where they are 3-0 on the season. Georgia Drake posted her fourth shutout of the season with nine saves against Curry, after posting a career-high 13 saves in a non-league win against Clark University earlier in the week. Zoe Cox registered a hat trick (three goals) against the Cougars, with all three assists courtesy of Olivia Pickard.

Three different players - Zeke Menedez, Alessandro Oggiano, Sam Winiarski - scored for the Salve Regina men's soccer (7-3-1, 3-0-0 CCC) in a 3-1 victory over Curry College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon. Salve Regina is unbeaten in their last 17 CCC contests (15-0-2) dating back to 2018. The Seahawks welcome the Bears of Bridgewater State University to Toppa Field (7 p.m.) for a non-league meeting. After earning their first win in the all-time series in 2017 (3-0 in Bridgewater, Mass.), Salve Regina has won (7-2) and tied (1-1) the last two meetings.

THURSDAY (Oct. 7)
Seahawks and Blue Jays meet in West Hartford, Conn., for women's tennis for the fourth match in the all-time series (3 p.m.). Salve Regina has won the previous three meetings by a combined 26-1 score.

FRIDAY (Oct. 8)
Salve Regina women's volleyball welcomes the return of Johnson & Wales University to the Rodgers Recreation Center to resume the match that started on September 15 and halted with the sets tied at 1-1. The third set will begin at 6 p.m.

SATURDAY (Oct. 9)
Salve Regina sailing sails at the Great Herring Pond Open (11 a.m.) hosted by Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay, Mass. The Seahawks shifted the location of their Sister Esther Whalen Open to Connecticut College in New London, Conn., last weekend. Alex Bowdler and Nils Tullberg skippered with their respective crews (Frances Donahoe, Caroline McNeil) to a seventh-place finish in their respective A and B divisions.

Salve Regina women's soccer returns to CCC action when it plays in Boston, Mass., against Wentworth (12 p.m.). Seahawks have won the last three meetings with the Leopards including 2-1 in Boston in 2018.

Salve Regina women's tennis makes its shortest road trip of the season to cross the Mount Hope Bridge from Portsmouth into Bristol, R.I., to face the Hawks of Roger Williams University (12 p.m.).

Seahawk field hockey finishes its three-game road trip against the Bison of Nichols College (1 p.m.) in Dudley, Mass.

Salve Regina football (4-1, 0-1 CCC) returns home to Toppa Field to host the University of New England (1 p.m.). The Seahawks suffered their first loss since 2019 (41-3 at Western New England) last Saturday. Jack Maguire passed for 161 yards, Joey Mauriello ran for 41 yards, and Chris Maida had his third straight game with a made field goal (34-yarder). Zachary Ludemann led all players with 15 tackles including 12 solo, two for losses of 10 yards. This Saturday will only be the third ever meeting between the Seahawks and Nor'easters on the gridiron. Salve Regina has totalled 86 points in two wins (33-10 and 53-17) against University of New England. Seahawk/Newporter alumni will be returning to Toppa Field as well with Salve Regina football celebrating its 30th season as a program.

Salve Regina men's soccer finished its 2019 regular season with a 4-0 win at home against Wentworth. The Seahawks and Leopards will meet for the first time since then on the turf in Boston (3 p.m.).

SUNDAY (Oct. 10)
Salve Regina softball hosts its first annual Home Run Derby as a fundraiser for its spring travel (3:30 to 5 p.m. at Toppa Field). All are welcome to participate - $1 per ball, or $10 for a dozen balls. Every home run earns participant a raffle ticket for prizes. Grand prizes also awarded for furthest ball hit and most home runs.
