Women's track and field completes day two at NEWMAC Championships
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Saturday, April 27, 2024) -- Women's track and field completed day two at the NEWMAC championship meet hosted by Springfield College.
Olivia Tacconi who has been setting Salve Regina team records all season in the women's 100-meter dash broke the record that she set yesterday, a time she herself set earlier in the season, with a finish of 12.68 for a fifth-place finish.
Five Seahawks raced in the women's 200 meters. Tacconi finished 14th in 26.71, Olivia McHugh placed 25th in 29.32, Madigan Haddock came in 27th in 29.33 and Meena Goswami crossed the line in 29th with a time of 29.99.
Senior captain McHugh set a personal best in the 200 meters and broke the 30 second barrier in her final individual collegiate race. Tacconi and Haddock also personal bests in the same event.
In the women's 800 meters Avery Braccia led the Seahawk field with a 19th place finish in a time of 2:30.96.
In the distance category Isabella Hastings and Anna Weygang raced the women's 5000 meters. Hastings ran a time of 18:50.04 with a 13th place finish and Weygang completed the event in 19:20.65 for 15th place.
In the field events Sofia Doukakis took 19th (25.80m) in the discus throw as the Seahawk's top finisher and 20th (8.81m) in the shot put. Victoria Bird threw 28.12m in the Javelin throw for 12th place, Salve Regina's furthest throw in the event. Kelsey Chiasson threw 22.89m in the discus taking 23rd and 9.71m in the shot put for 14th. Kallie Saalfrank finished 19th in the javelin throw (24.98m) and 16th in the shot put (9.58m). Saalfrank, followed up her personal best javelin throw yesterday with a personal record throw in the shot put today.
The team of Olivia McHugh, Hannah Rancourt, Goswami and Tacconi came in tenth in the 4x100 meter relay in 52.85. Tacconi, Braccia, Alanna Burke and Catherine Minegar also achieved tenth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:42.88.
"I am proud of the ladies for representing Salve so well," said head coach Andrew Furst. "They showed great support for one another all season long and today was no exception. Our first NEWMAC Championship experience has left us with the desire to come back next year even stronger."
Tacconi and Weygang are the two individual qualifiers for New England DIII Championships on Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4. Seahawk 4x100 meter and 4x800 meter teams will also have the opportunity to race. The meet will be hosted by Mount Holyoke College.
