Women's rugby ties Providence College

NEWPORT, R.I. -- On Saturday, Sept. 23 the Salve Regina Women's Rugby team fought to a 38-38 tie against in-state rival Providence College. The back-and-forth affair saw six different Seahawks score their first tries of the season.

Emily Turcotte (Auburn, Mass.) opened up the scoring for Salve and Alison Houle (Seekonk, Mass.) notched her first conversion of the game 20 minutes in. Tries were scored in rapid succession by Gracen Barter (Stamford, Conn.) and Abby Price (Bear Creek, Pa.), who scored her first career try. Providence College responded with three tries of their own and the scoreless streak was broken by Freshman Gabriella Rio (Sandy Hook, Conn.) with Alison Houle converting the kick from an incredibly tough angle.

Houle responded with a try and conversion of her own to give the Seahawks a 31-24 lead. Providence responded in turn with a converted try. Sarah Holcomb (Newtown, Conn.) darted through the defense to touch down the Seahawks last try of the match. With no time left on the clock, Providence was able to dot down a try and slot the conversion bringing the final score to 38-38. Alison Houle was the match's leading scorer with 13 points (one try, four conversions).

The Seahawks are back on the pitch 9/30 for their inaugural NOSOLO Mental Health Awareness Match at Toppa Field vs Plymouth State.
