Summary
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - The Salve Regina University men's ice hockey team defeated Suffolk University 4-3 to complete a sweep of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) weekend series Saturday night.

More than a game
Tonight was the men's ice hockey team inaugural Mental Health Awareness night. Salve Regina donned special customized game jerseys, featuring some mustaches, to be raffled off during the second period. Merchandise donated from local Newport businesses, notably O'Brien's Pub, was also raffled during the game with all proceeds from the evening being divided between the Movember Foundation and Newport Mental Health.

"Mental health is something that touches us all, the Pandemic has really made everyone aware of that," said sophomore defenseman Anthony Azzano who has helped organize this event. "We want to break the stigma around talking about mental health. We're all on the same team when it comes to our mental well-being, you're never alone. If we can make the difference to just one person through this it'll be worth it!"

Series and Streaks
The Seahawks are now 17-11-3 in the all-time series and have won six in a row.

Three Stars of the Game

  1. Salve Regina freshman Hoon Kim (Calgary, Alta.) scored his first career goal to open the scoring at 5:57 of the first. He made it 2-0 at 6:44 of the second on the powerplay, and assisted on Walinski's go-ahead goal in the third. It is the first multi-point game of his career as well.
  2. Salve Regina senior George Sennott collected his third game-winning goal of the season, all three coming versus CCC opponents.
  3. Suffolk senior Joey Feeney (Foxboro, Mass.) scored short-handed with 1:17 remaining to make it a one-score game and keep the Rams comeback hopes alive.

Turning Point
Salve Regina led 2-0, but Suffolk battled back to tie things 2-2 entering the third period. Mitch Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) scored on a breakaway at 4:53 to regain the lead before George Sennott (North Andover, Mass.) tacked on an insurance goal at 15:05 on a give-and-go feed from John McLean (North Andover, Mass.). That insurance proved necessary as Joe Feeney (Foxboro, Mass.) scored short-handed with 1:17 remaining to make it a one-score game. The Rams pulled the goalie in the final minute but could not get a shot on the Seahawks net and time ran out.

Quick Hits

  • Nicholas Latinovich (Vaugh, Ont.) made 18 saves to improve to 7-3-0 in net for the Seahawks.
  • Cal Wilcox (Pomfret, Conn.) made 22 saves in the loss to fall to 1-5-2 between the pipes for the Rams.
  • Salve Regina held a 26-21 edge in shots on goal.
  • Salve went 1-for-6 on the powerplay, while the Rams were 1-for-5 on the man-advantage.
