Back-to-back wins for the Seahawks

NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore Tori Bickel (Harleysville, Pa.) and freshman Eliza Timms (Agawam, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist each Thursday afternoon as Salve Regina University defeated Lasell College, 5-3, in a non-conference field hockey game at Grellier Field.

Salve Regina improves its record to 3-4 for the season, while Lasell's record stands at 4-4 overall.

The Seahawks capitalized early on in the first half, scoring three goals off of penalty corners. Timms took the corner shot, passing it up to sophomore Kaity Gannon (Sloatsburg, N.Y.) who assisted sophomore Tori Bickel (Harleysville, Pa.) driving the ball hard to the back of the cage, just inside the circle. At 21:21, freshman Hannah Bedrosian (Seekonk, Mass.) received a cross pass from junior Ashley Cody (Pawling, N.Y.) and fired it in the goal, putting the Seahawks ahead 2-0.

Lasell answered in the last two minutes of the first half when junior Sam Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) dribbled the ball down through the midfield, sending it to senior Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.), who got the shot off a one on one against Salve's goalie senior Ally Daly (Peabody, Mass.)

Bickel picked up the ball in the mid arch for Salve, sending it to sophomore Taylor Bulis (Lakeville, Mass.) who tipped the ball in for a late goal with 13 seconds left in the half, putting the visitors ahead, 3-1.

Both teams battled back and forth in the second half, scoring one after the other. Senior Nikki Pignone (Ipswich, Mass.) pushed the ball toward Flannery who nailed it in at the top of the arch for her ninth goal this year. Junior Vanessa Frost (North Attleboro, Mass.) popped the ball over Lasell keeper freshman Sofia Rodriguez (Peabody, Mass.) who was on the ground recovering from a rebound save.

Lasell sophomore Megan Horrigan (Wakefield, Mass.) pounced on a rebound in front of Salve Regina's cage, taking the unassisted goal, her fifth this year with six minutes remaining to cut the deficit with six minutes remaining. But Timms sealed the win for the Seahawks with her goal with two seconds remaining in the contest.

The Seahawks had a 20-18 lead in shots on goal and held an advantage of 12-8 in penalty corners.

Freshman goalkeeper Makena Leazer (Nashua, N.H.) started in the cage for the Lasers, saving five shots. Rodriguez was swapped in at the start of the second half, making eight saves. Daly remained in goal the whole game for Salve Regina, making 12 saves.

Lasell will host the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University at Grellier Field on Saturday, September 22 at 12 p.m. Salve Regina will be on the road again to play at Endicott College on Saturday, September 22 at 1 p.m.
