No.4 Wheaton overcomes No.1 Salve Regina in NEWMAC Championship game three

NEWPORT, R.I. (Thursday, May 9, 2024) -- No. 1 Salve Regina baseball hosted the No. 4 Wheaton College Lyons in game three of the NEWMAC Championship tournament and the Lyons successes in the third and eighth innings elevated them 5-2 over the Seahawks. 

Brandon Grover's leadoff walk followed by Matt D'Amato's sacrifice bunt, Evan O'Rourke's walk, Hunter Yaworski's single and Tyler Cannoe's walk gave the Seahawks an early lead. However, the Lyons took over in the third inning advancing three runners home. 

The Lyons success continued in the eighth inning when Mike Maher was walked home, and Tyler Bellan's sacrifice fly allowed Kevin Matos to score to make it 5-1. The final action of the game when pinch hitter Alex Holberton made it home, but Salve Regina fell short 5-2 to end the day.

Most recent contest: Earlier this year Salve Regina split with Wheaton in a doubleheader. On Sunday, April 21, Salve Regina lost 3-0, but bested Wheaton 7-0 later that afteroon.

On Saturday, May 11, Reynolds Field will be the site for three NEWMAC tournament games (9:30 a.m. | 12:30 p.m. | 3:30 p.m.). Earlier today Babson College beat the United States Coast Guard Academy 12-10 in game four of the NEWMAC tournament. This means the Seahawks will take on the Coast Guard Bears Saturday, May 11, at 9:30 a.m. Wheaton will take on Babson in game six at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
