Seahawks rally to clinch No. 3 seed in CCC Championships

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Down a set and trailing 21-11 in the second, Salve Regina University came back for a 3-1 win over the University of New England in both team's Commonwealth Coast Conference regular-season finale Saturday (Oct. 27) afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Set scores were 24-26, 25-23, 26-24 and 25-15.

After being one point away from winning the opening set (24-22), Salve Regina saw the Nor'easters win four consecutive points to come away with the frame, 26-24. The Seahawks appeared destined to go down 2-0 before roaring back from a 10-point deficit to shift the momentum of the match. Salve benefitted from six UNE attack errors to aid its surge.

The visitors eeked out a two-point decision (26-24) in Set 3 before putting away the match with a 10-point win in the fourth.

Junior Clare Adams (New Concord, Ohio) and sophomore Jennifer Duggan (Merrimack, N.H.) combined for 25 kills to pace the winners. Sophomore Katelyn Beauregard (Dartmouth, Mass.) chipped in eight to go with four total blocks. At the net, sophomore middle Erin McGloin (East Islip, N.Y.) registered two solo blocks and four block assists.

Setting the Salve attack was first-year Leah LoConte (Marshfield, Mass.), who recorded 33 assists. Defensively, senior Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) piled up a match-best 26 digs.

The Nor'easters got 11 kills from senior Paige Curran (Chelmsford, Mass.) and 10 from junior Angie Brunette (North Andover, Mass.). The duo combined for seven solo blocks and four service aces.

UNE also received solid performances from junior Maria Kuehl (Middleton, N.H.) and sophomore Leah Janelle (Madbury, N.H.). Kuehl finished with 27 assists and 15 digs, while Janelle registered eight kills and 12 digs.

The win closes the Seahawks' regular-season record at 15-13 overall, 6-2 in CCC matches. UNE drops to 16-9 overall, 5-3 in conference play. Both squads will open play in the CCC Championships on Tuesday (Oct. 30), with third-seeded Salve hosting No. 6 Wentworth Institute of Technology and fifth-seeded UNE heading to No. 4 Western New England University. Both matches will start at 7 p.m.
