Seahawks fall in five-setter to Golden Bears, 3-2

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Senior Rachel Cervone (West Springfield, Mass.) and junior Samantha Shomo (Glen Gardner, N.J.) combined for 35 kills to lead the Western New England College Golden Bears to a 3-2 victory over the Salve Regina University Seahawks in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference volleyball match played at the University of New England on Saturday.

 

Set scores were 26-24, 17-25, 25-13, 23-25, 15-11.

 

Junior Katharina Boes (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) played a strong all-around match for WNEC (19-8, 4-1 TCCC), recording 44 assists, 11 digs and nine kills. Classmate Lauren Landri (New Canaan, Conn.) finished with nine kills and three total blocks.

 

Defensively, the Golden Bears got 22 digs from Cervone, 19 from sophomore Caroline Bitters (Greenfield, Mass.) and 17 by junior Marci Egbert (Wayne, N.J.).

 

Salve Regina (8-16, 4-3) senior Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.) posted a team-high 12 kills and 16 digs in a losing effort. Classmate Brittney Canaff (Paramus, N.J.) contributed 10 kills along with 18 digs.

 

Sophomore Jessica Meyer (Seymour, Conn.) handed out 17 assists, while first-year Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) dug out a match-high 22 attack attempts.
